Marsh Hill Boys Grammar Tech School

Good Morning all. Graham Miles here. I attended Marsh Hill from 1961 to 1968. I’m in Canada now having emigrated in 1974. I’m curious to know if there are any copies of Compass floating around. I’m trying to track down some of the poems I had published in one or two issues. Would appreciate any assistance. Cheers and Merry Christmas to any classmates still around. I still stay in touch with Chris Yardley who lives on a sheep farm in Cornwall.
Hi Graham,
here are the scans. I'll scan the entire edition later to give your poems some context but it may take me a few days as there are 50 pages!

Once again, many thanks. I wasn’t sure if Compass was a one-off or if other issues followed after I left. Interesting reading, especially Brian Nelson’s account of the Tamworth walk, which I was on.

I found this amongst the old copies of 'Compass' & thought it might be of interest, given the seasonal interest in problem solving. It's an 'O' Level Additional Mathematics exam paper from 1970. I recall that I passed the exam in 1970 but today I spent the alotted two and a half hours just trying to figure out how to tackle question 1(a)!

Good Grief. I passed probably around 1966, but cannot fathom now what the questions are even asking.

Hi Graham, the editorial in the 1966 edition suggests that this was the first edition. I have that edition (my first year) plus '67, '68, '70 & '71. I don't know if there was a '69 edition or if any followed '71. There was also a spoof version called 'Compost' which featured a story about a school camp to the roof, which involved getting the school minibus up the stairwell. Sadly I don't have a copy of that.

I guess I should scan them all for posterity. Maybe I'll try using OCR and/or Inkscape to get the file size down.

Glad that you enjoyed reading it. We have my late Mother to thank for them having survived, as she was something of a hoarder of scholarly memorabilia. I have her Scholar's Leaving Certificate from Burlington Street School dated 1938!
