Market Hall 1835 - 1963

Post #110 gives a date for this photo as 1890ish, so it had already been standing for at least 60 years. Presumably, the many young lads (who outnumber adults) could be errand boys or similar, earning some welcome cash. Must have been plenty of call for erand boys. This photo shows the Worcester Street side, which in many ways, was far more impressive than the Bull Ring side.

I used to go to the market with my uncle and cousin, fish and vegetables early in the morning and there seemed to be errand boys all over. And to be a5 11/12 they all seemed to know what they were doing!

I think this is a stall within Market Hall. The windows look like those of the Hall. Ted Davenport's fish stall, probably stall #16. Viv.View attachment 87077
Wow, what a fab image, I have just found out from the 1921 census that my grandfather Alfred Hugh Palmer was a fishmonger working for E Davenport 21 Market Hall. So this can’t have been very far away and infact my grandfather might be one of the lads in the photo any idea when this photo was taken?

IMG_5913.jpeg Hi Pam G. Ambrose Edward Davenport (Ted) was my great uncle and yes he was definitely at No.21 market hall. He died in Dec.1925 so the photos before this date.
His Son John Edward Ambrose was not a well man and did not take over the business after hi Fathers death.
How interesting to discover your grandfather worked for Ted, great family history find. Clive Davenport.

Alfred would have been 29 yrs. Looks about that age ?

Sorry, Pam. I've no confirmed date for the photo, but maybe c1910-20, based on the style of collar. It's great to hear your connection.
