Lower Hurst Street Birmingham

Elaine Hemming

master brummie
My Grand father Thomas William Gibson jr was born 1897 at court 12/7 Lower Hurst Street Birmingham - His brother name was Harry Gibson, Frank Gibson and they had a sister called Florence Gibson - their Parents names where father Thomas William Gibson and Mother was Mary Ann Gibson nee Rothero. I don't know how long they lived in Lower Hurst Street, but they also have a connection to Ladywood as well, with Nelson Street, Barker Street & Garbett Street.
Do you have any photo's of Lower Hurst Street or a Map of Lower Hurst Street and marking where court 12/7 would be, I know that Lower Hurst Street was from Bromsgrove Street to Sherlock Street.

Later in life my Grandfather was Landlord of The Talbot Public House, 24 Moat Lane Digbeth Birmingham, the older premises which was demolished, not the new one, which has since change name to the Bullring Tavern

Below is a map c1889 showing Court 12 Lower Hurst St. in red. The street running up to the right from Lower Hurst St is Sherlock St. Afraid I do not know how the numbering would have run.

Hi Elaine

Welcome to the forum, I remember the old Talbot, but not before it was bombed during the war. I remember it from after the war as it continued to remain open as only half the pub it was until they opened the new Talbot on St Martins Row. I could never understand why they changed the name only after a few short years to the Bull Ring Tavern.City The Talbot Pub Moat Lane[1].JPGCity Digbeth Talbot .jpg

Hi Phil thank you for the photo's of the pub, I have these in my family album collection along with members of the Gibson family, my Grandfather Thomas William Gibson ran this public house till 1947 when he passed away at the age of 49 - he was 7 months from his 50th Birthday. - The one sad feeling is that I never knew him and wished I had that pleasure, as I was born in 1955.

Mikejee, thank you so much for the map of where Court 12 was on Lower Hurst Street, I now can take my mother over to Lower Hurst st and now roughly show her where her father was born towards Sherlock Street end, to make it a day to remember for her, will take her to the back to backs of Court 15 so that she can see what it was like for him. I have attached two photo's of my Grandfather - thank you once again. Elaine

Mikejee - could I please ask another favour from you, is there a possibility that you have a map of Ladywood and could you Mark up on the map the following - 4 back of 101 Nelson Street and 5 Cornwall Place Shakespear Street, both these addresses are also know for the Gibson family - Many Many Thanks in advance. Elaine

Elaine. do you mean Shakespeare Road.? Shakespeare St was in Sparkhill, but the road was in Ladywood

Assuming it was the road, below is a map, c 1955 showing 4 back 101 Nelson st in red, and 5 Cornwall Place in blue. Have made map rather a larger area than necessary as many of the roads nearby do not now exist on modern maps. Have also worked out exactly where they were today on Google maps and marked with an arrow. You might have some difficulty getting to those places today.

With reference to map in post#8 here is an aerial view dated 1937. The yellow arrow points to the house and the red to Nelson Street.

Mikejee, this is brilliant, sorry it was Road not Street for Shakespeare - just can't believe this, I know that Nelson street was in two parts, and only small section of this road still exist leading to the sandpits, so my mother was born in Nelson street that no longer exist according to the ariel photo that you have done. once again thanks you so much, this is helping me to compile a history document for the Gibson family

Hi Everyone, need your help again,
I have now gone further back with my family search, and was wondering if you can sort some more maps for Me. I am looking at the year 1889 to 1892:-

  2. Great Colmore Street Lee Bank (I have no House numbers at present.)
  3. Latimer Street (same again not house no. at present)
  1. 95 Coleshill Street Gosta Green Bham -
  2. 25 Great Colmore Street (this is a different person from the other no.2) -
  3. Court 4 Park lane Aston and No 2 Bell Place Park Lane Aston -
also how do I go about obtaining records from the Coldstream Guards my great grand father Thomas William Gibson joined age 19 in 1889 and was discharged aged 22 28/3/1892 was in the Boer War
