Louise Road (off Victoria Road) Handsworth

Malc Toy

The Baggie Man
According to 19th century census’ my Great Grandparents John & Emma Toy lived in a now demolished, one up one down back to back terrace in Louise Road before moving towards the end of the century to a nearby corner shop premises, 38 Victoria Road where the entrepreneurial John Toy, opened a Green grocery shop. I wonder if anyone on this wonderful forum has any knowledge or photographs of this area prior to demolition?

the corner shop was not demolished its still there..corner of louise road and victoria road..click on street view below and looking at the old maps there is not much left of louise road...what number did they live at ?

Actually Lyn, following an open spinal operation surgery Christmas, I’m currently on holiday recovering in warm and sunny Fuerteventura and do not have access to my records showing the actual address in Louise Road. I can check the number when I’m home. Thanks for your help.

On the census he was down as being born in a Mansfield which is of course in Nottinghamshire but I seem to remember in one census Lancashire was mentioned.
John was definitely listed as Louise Rd and then a later census in Victoria Rd.
Hope that helps, otherwise I’ll check when I get home. Thanks so much again guys !
