Mike,

I don't live in Birmingham but I am a member of the library in Solihull where I live and Birmingham also. I wouldn't swear to it but I think if you say you work in the town you would be accepted for enrolment

I hadn't realised that . anyway, i have filled in the form for Lancashire as per bordesley exile, and will see what happens. If not I will try solihull. We shall see. Reading certainly don't.

Mike - as BordesleyExile says, the online application should result in a temporary barcode which should enable you instant access (I think?). Hope you both come back and tell of your experiences as I think this is a golden opportunity for researchers and should be encouraged.
 
Aidan, you seem to know an awful lot about the papers etc, could you help me, I have all the details of my g-g-grandfathers conviction, but unable to access any information that may have been printed at the time, as I live in Devon. Do you think I could access it through a library card from here? I would love to read any more about it other than the court session details. I will have a look at the link that bordesley posted too, thank you bordesley.

Hi Aidan, Would it possible to access the Sunday Mercury archives I wonder,when I was stationed in Egypt
my family used to send me the paper each week. In 1952 there was a picture of a Mr Horace Turville of
Glebe Farm who ran a pen/friend club for people all over the world.To cut a long story short, I wrote to
him, his daughter Enid answered my letter, we met when I came on leave, and spent 54 years together
until she passed away two and a half years ago, it would be great to see that picture again. Bernard

I would love to help but the online newspaper access only includes the Times and for Birmingham only the Birmingham Daily Post Dec 04, 1857 - Sep 29, 1900. There are many other papers and they are adding to the online collection all the time so maybe at some point.

The Mercury have some assorted pics online at https://birminghamcoventrymidlands.newsprints.co.uk/ and you could try emailing them to see if they can help. Alternatively, the Birmingham Archive may help (not sure if they keep this or not).

Good luck in your such. Pictures are so meaningful.
 
Thanks Aidan, will defo have a look at that, as it is Exeter I live, and already have a library card for here.

Hey Mike - Oxfordshire does. And they accept members from neighbouring authorities, so you should be fine. I'm in West Berks and use Oxfordshire libraries a lot.
 
Thanks Phoebe. ancashire came up trumps, but might try oxfordshire as well. Technically I live in West Berks also. The border with Reading is at the bottom of my garden

You might as well, you can join online so it's no trouble. Always good to have another string to the bow! I live on the edge of the county, in the Downlands, so my nearest library is actually in Oxon (although in my head Berkshire still ends at Oxford!)
