Lime Grove, Venetia Road

Hi, your mother in law lived two doors down from my Grandmother. She would have been 10 years old in 1934, her parents were Heurtley and Martha Pittaway, she had 7 brothers and sisters.

Does anyone know if there was another grove off Venetia road apart from Lime Grove
Yes there was, if you walked further up Venetia road towards The Dump, on the right, there was another little grive, the same layout as Lime grove, I remember that a member of the Hells Angels and his family used to live there and my younger brother used to go up there to play with them

Hello everyone, when I was a child, I lived at 5 Lime Grove from about 1966/67 to 1971. I remember lots of families that lived in and around Lime Grove. Our neighbours at number 6, were the Allen's and Robert was my friend. Other names, mostly children, are Jane Ingram, John Kavanaugh, John 'Bosco' Byrne's, Blondell a black girl and Brian, Leslie and Tina Gates. I have lots of memories including playing with Michael kincannon, or was it Concannon who lived on Garrison Lane?

Hello, l am Mike Concannon and lived at 302 Garrison Lane. I think that the houses of Lime Groves back yards used to face our back yard, there was a family directly opposite our back yard and a nice bubbly lady called Mrs Watson lived there, she had three children, Mark (the eldest) then Jane and then Karen and Kim the dog. I used to play a lot with Mark. I was so very happy to see your message and I am trying to place you, l do have vague memories of a girl that l used to play with sometimes, maybee that was you? Please reply back, cheers, mike

Hi,

Just noticed that the picture in post 30 shows the address as Saltley. I would
have thought that it was Bordesley Green.
Has the boundary changed since the time of the pic?

Kind regards
Dave

Hello Michael, I am indeed Mark Watson.
I can't believe it has been over half a century since we lived in Lime Grove.
All the Watson's you have mentioned are still around, including my Mom, who is now in her 80s.
My most vivid memory of playing with you, was when we used to chat to each other from our bedroom windows that faced each other across our back yards.
We used our special code to call each other. We used to call out at top of our voices, M-A-R-K and chat. All good memories.

That's amazing!
Hard to believe. And your mom is still good aswell. I remember the dump and being down there with you or with your whole family, we would be begging your mom to set fire to the rubbish down there and she would usually give in after we nagged her enough and then the fire engine and police would come and we would have ro run. I remember that l would buy the Beano and the Dandy every Friday evening and we would both sit on top of some rubbish which was on top of the dust bins at the back of your house, we would read one then swap and read the other one. Your mom was a bright light in my childhood, my mom was suffering a bit from depression after loosing a daughter at one year old, a year before l was born, so she could be a bit cranky, your mom was bubbly and happy! I remember those times better than l can remember last week.
When evening was falling, you would hear a call going out, "MARK, WASH, BED"! usually called from the bottom of the back entry, and wherever you were, you would come running home. My dad died only a couple of years ago, he was 98, he never forgot Garrison lane and used often talk of you and the neighbours, right till up before he died.
I feel sorry for rhe posh kids that never had the adventures or the dump as we had.
I am on Facebook if you want to look me up, l don't post much. l live in Loughrea, County Galway in Ireland.

Hello again Michael, it's funny how we all have specific memories of the events we experience throughout life.
Lots of people say that they were the 'good old days'. I just think they were our normal days, personal to ourselves at whatever stage of life we are at.
I certainly remember the Dump, we used to call it the Tip.
There used to be a couple of council workmen in wooden huts who used to guard the entrances, the one in Venetia Road and the other end of the tip at Adderley Road.
We knew them as Charlie Chuck Chuck in Venetia Road and Alfie Scratchcock at the other end.
We used to sing a song about Charlie. It went 'Charlie Charlie Chuck Chuck Chuck, went to bed with nine young ducks, one duck died, Charlie cried, Charlie Charlie Chuck Chuck Chuck'.
I have lots of other memories of the tip and as you mention, we had great adventures as poor kids. Thank you for your memories of you and your parents.
