Re: Samuel Lewis

thanks Bren i'm looking at the mo, this whole side of the family is proving to be a bit of a mystery considering the other side are smiths!!!!! i am the grandaughter of Mary's second son Edwin Melvin born in 1930 15 yrs after Patrick died in ww1?????? all we have is a name of mullins who ran a shop round the corner and was possibly irish!!!!!! we cant get much info as the actual melvins are quite biased.

Re: Samuel Lewis

Hi Laura

Had a good look at the 1901 Census but sorry to say i cannot find a Mary born in Brum with Samuel as the father. Will keep looking around for a bit, you never know what might turn up.

Re: Samuel Lewis

Yes those are my grandads half siblings, patrick was born just after his dad was killed in gallipoli and he himself died at a young age, Mary Lewis had my grandad and his two other brothers John and Joe with Mr Mullins

Re: Samuel Lewis

There is this marriage --

Samuel Lewis/Emily Alice Jeynes 2nd qtr 1890 Birmingham 6d 223

There is also another one in 1894 but idealy you need the birth cert for Mary so that you can find out her mothers name. I suggest you send for one or both of the cert's you have details for and specify you want the one with Samuel named as the father.
As for Mr Mullins, you only say he was "round the corner", do you know what area or roads involved, if so, have you looked at Electoral Rolls or in the Directories for that time period

Re: Samuel Lewis

Mary Lewis lived at 3 Court 1 St Georges St when she married, i also have an Edwin Mullins registered as living at the same address from the 1920's. I know Mary lived in Smith Street when my grandad and his brothers were born, we have been told by Josie (Mary Melvin b1913 daughter) that Mr Mullins lived opposite and ran a shop and that his children with his wife (catholic hence no divorce) and my grandad and his brothers all played together, but he vanishes around 1940 my grandad was told he died but he may also have gone to ireland (i have missed out all of the nasty comments that where made about Mullins as it was obviously a big stigma in the 30's to be having children out of wedlock and with another womans husband!!!!!)

Re: Samuel Lewis

Hiya,

Eventually got the cert and it is this marriage that Mary was born from and i have found the family on the 1891 cenus. Emily was 36 and Samuel 30 when they married it appears she was married before as she has 4 other daughters on the census and her Father Nathaniel Collyer is listed as living with them (this name is on the birth cert as Emily's previous name), there is sad news on the cert Emily is noted as deceased only 2 days after Mary's birth, i now have more questions, what happened to the sisters? was Mary bought up by her dad? who is Jeynes? why did Mary lie on her marriage cert?????????????????????

There is this marriage --

Samuel Lewis/Emily Alice Jeynes 2nd qtr 1890 Birmingham 6d 223

Re: Samuel Lewis

Do you think that Emily was married to Mr Jeynes and that the elder daughters could have been fathered by him
Could this be one of them?

Re: Samuel Lewis

that may be the case as i have tried searching for the older girls under Jeynes and cant find a thing!!!

Re: Samuel Lewis

Seems likely with George Jeynes and Geogina as a family name.

I hate to confuse but just found another John Brannon's death around the same time...
Deaths Jun 1878 BRANNON John 33 Birmingham 6d123

I've also found under an alternative spelling...
(this also is very common when researching)

Re: Samuel Lewis

i think the Emily Alice Collyer i have found is the right one as all the ages in the census and marriages tie in with her being born in 1853, i have also found a Nathaniel Collyer in the 1851 Census (tho i cannot open the file as its on a fee paying site, cannot find it on the free census) who appears to be the right one

NATHANIEL COLLYER 31
Worcester, Worcester North, Tything of Whistones

Re: Samuel Lewis

This Nathaniel collyer age 31 born Guernsey British subject,Widower, cabinet maker.Lodging with the Howard family.

Re: Samuel Lewis

Thankyou Alberta, seems to be mystery after mystery.

The Nathaniel (Nathaiel Freeman Collyer) I have noted as Emily's father appears to have married in 1843 in Kidderminster, I have found this on the free BMD site i think the spouse is Eliza Bond but not 100% on this.

I thought once i had Mary Lewis' details it would be a bit easier (other than the Mullins bit) but it seems my family started as it ment to go on!!!!!

Re: Samuel Lewis

I have made a connection!!!!!
This is the right one, he is a lodger with his mother and her husband, i am soooooooooooooo excited!!!!!!

Re: Samuel Lewis

whoop whoop another break through, Samuel was married before too, Mary Ann Burns and Alice and Kate or Katherine are his daughters not Emily Alice's!!!!!!!!!
