Thanks Lloyd heres another one

Well done Les

I listened to him everyday when I worked in Birmingham

Didn't Les Ross start off on WM? I remember winning one of his phone-in competitions around 1969. Prize was 5gns and an LP. I had to phone the studio several times to remind them to send the prize! :-)

Didn't Les Ross start off on WM? :-)

I listened to Les Ross on Radio Birmingham before it was called WM. Remember one morning he said he'd had no toast from the canteen, so some listeners took some to the studio while he was on air. I wish him all the best.

WM seems to have a manager who has no idea how to keep listeners happy, remember our Malcolm Boyden getting his show scrapped ? possibly the biggest radio blunder of all time.
Female presenters just don't seem to have the knack to hold my attention & I've stopped listening altogether & now that Ed Doolan is on lunchtime I don't hear him in my workshop. Personally I only used to listen to WM in the morning because I didn't want to hear music - particularly because both WM & H&W seem to have one box of old records that they keep playing week after week & drove me insane.

Les Ross escapes just in time as WM dives in the ratings

You're right, OldMohawk, it was Radio Birmingham back then. The studio/offices were on the corner of Hill Street/New Street and you could pop in there for car stickers etc.

Like you, Izzy, I soon tired of the incessant 'music' repeats and only listen to local radio now for football commentaries.

only listen to Les Ross and Tony Butler and Carl Chinn on Sunday the rest is boring stuff and the Phil Upton jingles drive me nuts

I loved Les' Sunday morning Round the World show. We lived in Cheltenham at the time and could just about hear him.

I wrote to Les and asked if he would phone my hubby's half brother in Australia as they had never met and had only spoken once, when their Father died.
And bless him, he did and from that one phone call a lovely relationship came about for the 2 brothers that lasted until the brother in Australia died.

I never told my hubby that I had written to Les and boy was he surprised when the phone went!!!

So Les......... thanks to you, the brothers met 3 or 4 times and it was wonderful. If it hadn't of been for you making that phone call they would never have known each other, bless you and have a great retirement :o))

Amazing to think this early west coast main line electric loco is now 43 years old! As E 3137 (its original number) it was one of the soulless boxes I despised for replacing the steam locos I knew, but now - it has earned its place in history and in my heart. Nice to see the 'Electric Blue' livery again!
Here's the website about it: https://www.e3137.co.uk/index.htm

And the man himself at his namesake's controls!

he should go on birminghams walk of stars if hes not there already. he has given pleasure to many, many people over the years.

Listened in to what was supposed to be his last show today and he is back on Monday????????????. Any ideas anyone?. Jean.

Les is a smashing guy as Jean said he worked at Witton Cemetery for a while. I remember he came to the second open day we had at Key Hill Cemetery. I thought at the time how he put himself out to come.

I agree with the comments I am not keen on Jo Malin's or Phil Upton's show trivial chatter no humor. The new times are not good with Ed being on at lunch time I miss most of his show now. I would have loved to have gone on Les's train trip at Christmas for the Kidney Kid's appeal but I was at work. I hope he does another one. Have a great retirement Les although I wonder if he will retire and why?

Wendy it's not the same the daytime shows on WM and no sooner Eds on he's gone. Les did say today that he's back on Monday so maybe he's had a change of heart or date. Jean.

Les Ross a great broadcaster. I remember as a young copper in the 1980's telling him to shift his car when he was dj'ing at Tamworth Carnival...he was very apologetic and did so straight away

who would really wan't to listen to WM

WM used to be uniquely different with more emphasis on chat with the likes of Malcolm Boyden who was the most popular presenter they ever had but someone in management decided to scrap his show, good move there WM ?

Bit by bit it's turned over to more music & now it's ruined & just a clone of every other BBC local radio. All that's left worth turning on for is Ed Doolan who will probably hang up his mike before long

To each their own Izzy but it was when Boing Boing got his own mainstream show that I stopped listening.

I preferred Boyden on sport - BTW I never listen to sport.

Izzy you say cloned and you are correct. We listen to radio Shropshire and when the news comes on it is usually by a young lady by the name of Kiara something or other turn to WM and guess what it's that Mis Kiara something or other. Two places at one time. I don't think so. Used to love WM but do listen to Ed when some guest is on who interests us. Bye. Jean.

The problem with music played on WM, H&W & all the other BBC local stations is that they seemingly have only one box of CD's probably bought from a car boot sale so they play the same ones over & over, day after day; month after month, whoever picks them seems to think we all want to hear Rod Stewart & simply red every five minutes

I think you have hit the nail on the head Izzy. I preffered it when Ed was on for three hours and Les Ross or Danny Kelly was on for three hours. We don't listen in as often mind you Pete is at home now and he watches lots of flog it and the likes. Jean.

I was delighted to meet Les Ross twice over the past few days on my latest visit to Brum. He gave a very entertaining question and answer session at the Museum and Art Gallery on Monday that I came upon by chance. Then yesterday when I was walking through the Mailbox I went into the BBC centre for a look around and he greeted me with the words "by heck you don't half get around!". As we are both into transport history we had a lot to chat about as well as a bit about broadcasting. Lovely man, really enjoyed meeting him.

Simon
