They were certainly buried at Witton but 1933 (and 1910) is a long time ago. This is a link to the cemetery record....

I think it is the June burial and there is a digital download available (click on entry). However I've never done one and I think people have said it's not really worth the money.

Maybe someone else will be to give more info.

I found out that 3xgreat grandfather died in the Workhouse Infirmary in 1893 and was buried in a public grave in Witton Cemetery. When I went to find it, the area had been covered with more soil and re-used for recent graves. However, a beautiful grave from 1866 still stands, complete with a footstone in place. It's worth a try! Good luck in your search.

Yeah WMS it’s frustrating that I’ve had to pay when they could clearly just have it on a website for people to view ,selfish really when you consider that the only reason someone would want that information is for ancestry purposes, it’s like there making money off our ancestors , I guess it was worth ten pound for the information but the problem is it’s just presented on a Registry form in script handwriting, it’s really hard to read ,could some give it a go please for me ,I’ve sat looking at it for 2 hours , it’s so frustrating I’ve tried to upload the file and it won’t let me so I have tried to take some screenshots and upload them but it’s really faded the name and date of burial are the only things I can read clearly, I think the address says back 32 Clifton road but that’s about it & Thanks Rosie and that’s a shame least you got to visit the spot though that’s still special ,I was speaking to a friend about it today and he said he’s sure that’s the graves are there a hundreds years so hopefully I might just of caught my grandads timeframe and if what my maa told us when we were younger there are other people in the same grave so that might extend it a bit aswell ,this is all just well wishing tho so far because I can’t read what it says

I regards the scans, most of it seems clear. Name, address, burial date. Situation of grave 75 28941. But I suppose it's description of grave and charges that's difficult.

Looks like 'untracked' and 'grant'. Not sure about the other bits.

I thought it was "unbricked" but agree it looks like "grant".
I would email a scan of and ask them what it says and means. Also are they able to provide a map of where the grave was situated.

I think it’s generational because my dad read it straight away aswell lol ,Why would it say grant do you think they may have been the undertakers ?? anybody come across anything to do with grant in the ancestry & Ive just been up to the cemetery it doesn’t open the big gates till 9 on a Saturday & the office is only open Monday to Friday and I’m at work but I’m going to knock on the grave keepers house and show him to see if he could help me with anything ,thanks for all you help anyway guys I’ll keep you all updated

It is possible the word "grant" refers to a deed of grant. This means someone has purchased the grave plot and has rights over the plot for a period of time (often 50 years). Depends on whether a family could afford it or not. If they could then there could be several family burials in the same plot.
Might be wrong though so do check.
Only thought of it as I recently had to send the deeds of a grave to the undertakers for a family burial.

My great grandmother was buried at Witton in 1944 and someone must have bought the plot/rights because her daughter (my great aunt) and her husband were also buried there in 2002 & 1996. They are all commemorated on the headstone.

Not sure how many people the plot could contain because my great grandfather was also buried at Witton but he's not mentioned on the gravestone.

So, it's certainly possible that William Lane will be in a grave with one of his children.

Of William and Martha's children it is possible that Martha, Susannah, Hannah and Elizabeth were buried (or cremated) at Witton. There's more doubt about Elizabeth because her married name was Taylor.

Also it seems that the twins George and Thomas who died young were buried there. And sadly it seems they would've had to had two funerals - George's funeral in April and Thomas' in May.

I've edited my post, sorry! When I was looking for the 1866 one there were some groundsmen who knew where it was, I think part of the section was re-used. They were very helpful, hopefully someone can help, the office staff were good too.

I’ve been there today but unfortunately everything was closed so my wife is going to go back with all the information everyone gave me on here on Monday ,but I had a good look myself was walking round for a hour just incase I came across any of them but no luck today there’s so many graves though I did find a load of graves all form the thirties but no luck ,also there were two huge big spaces that have been recently cleared I’m guessing ,so hopefully it wasn’t there ,I did have a strange feeling it was though I don’t know why probley just thinking the worst ,I did have a knock on the old gate keepers bungalow but it’s just a rented property now they have no connection to the the cemetery which was disappointing, just fingers crossed for Monday thanks everyone for helping and wishing me well

So took the day off work today after 6 hours of searching with the kids and my wife I was nearley giving up I assumed it was one of the unmarked and decayed grave was so disappointed , the whole time we was looking there was a crow in a tree kraaing making a right racket, anyway before we went my daughter went over to the tree and noticed there were a few graves underneath the bushes at the base of the tree and she found the number we had been looking for all day ,so I started frantically ripping at the ivy and there behold my grandad and auntys grave I cried happy tears I was so glad we found them,I’m going to go back tomorrow uncover them properly and give it a clean and see if there are any other names under the bush there are two graves still coverd aswell with matching headstones and style so I’m going to go back with tools tommorow and uncover them just incase there Martha and the boys graves because of the matching resemblance and style but yeah thanks everyone for helping ,especially MWS and PJMBURNS for all your hard work and research because I never would of took so much interest if you guys weren’t so willing to help Thanks again

So pleased you have found it and that there is a stone. Family history is addictive.
Be very careful if you try to clean it. Might be worth checking at a stone masons for best way to proceed.

what a great result so pleased for you...which reminds me that i need to book an appointment with one of the staff at witton who told me a few months ago that they will be happy to lead me to my grandfathers grave...i have the grave number and walked around trying to find it during covid restrictions but no luck...i doubt grandad has a headstone as they didnt have money but i would love to lay some flowers for albert ernest wood who fought in france during ww1 was gassed twice but did come back only to die in 1938 aged 50 leaving my nan with 3 young daughters to provide for and face ww2 alone as she never married again...good luck with your clean up

I'm so glad you were successful! I think the crow was helping too. This reminds of an unmarked grave we found once and there was a white feather on it.
