Lad in the lane

The Lad in the Lane ( Green Man)is the oldest building in Birmingham, some Churches are older. The Crown pub is still the oldest Pub because the Lad in the Lane ( Green Man) has not always been a pub.

Wasn't the 'Lad' outside Birmingham, in Erdington Urban District until the boundary changes??

Great pic Peter. I wonder what's the weighing machine for? Probably to check Frothy going in and coming out to see how much ale he's supped!

Great photo, haven't seen that one before. I used to live just down the road from the Green Man in Bromford Crescent. I have a couple of particular memories from the pub. In the 1950's a few boys including myself used to play football with the landlord's son (I think his name was Michael) in the cellar under the elevation that extended out towards the road (to the right looking at the photo). We'd play football anywhere in those days! Also, I remember when I was about 15/16 congregating in the old building at the back of the pub (we'd call it a conservatory now) with some mates to welcome the local villain home after he'd done a spell in Liverpool Prison. I wonder what happened to him. Another local "hard case", lived in the next house to him. I don't suppose anyone out there remembers either of these guys do they?

Blimey Johnny you picked the two roughest families in Erdington. I got a good beating from one of the family (his name escapes me) out of school once.
The Green Man ( nice to hear you call by it's proper name) is my local. It still as it's moments but it's a lot quieter then it used to be. The Green house at the back, as I called it, has long gone.
Just be careful about using peoples names on here mate they might be still around :-(

Sounds like we're about the same age Frothblower. We're both bluenoses too. You'll be telling me next that you used to be part of the 38-a-side football matches we used to play in Rookery Park for about 3 solid hours every Sunday. Which schools did you go to?

Not me mate never was the sporty type. Knackered me just watching.
I was born in Erdington Hall Road, went to Erdington Hall school and then to Moor End Senior school.

I like to thank 'Frothy' for reminding posters to be careful of what and how much info' they post about people who may still be alive, or who's families may be around... Naming people is a no, no in some cases!
Also to another member who suggested I take a look as a 'Moderator' on the site... Good work guys!
New members may not know and long time member may sometime forget that this site can have legal action taken against it in some cases!
