Hi Jez, The flyover was opened on 15th October 1961 O0

Thought I'd share this with you. I won't bother telling you what it is, I'm sure most of you remember it well

The old Digbeth overpass. I remember going over it with my father when we drove to my Aunties house over Shirley was. It's finally gone. What a strange contraption it was but it served it's purpose. It's amazing that it was there for so many years.

And did ya know Jennyann that half the steel panels used on the construction was work that was "fiddled or over the wall " O0

Really, Cromwell.....Now wouldn't the City have paid for this...ok, I get it. The City paid for it but the steel panels had been used before and were purchased much cheaper than they were invoiced for or "half inched" from somewhere else.
We'll have to do away with you now Crom...you know too much! Can we know too
or is that info hidden never to be revealed? I'd understand if it is.

Nice reminder Jerry, I remember them putting it up as I worked in Heath Mill Lane at the time :)

Pictures like that leave a lump in my throat, when I see how pur town was decimated to get traffic in. At least there were a few older buildings on the right (south side of High Street Bordesley). I see from the 1939 directory that Rowley and Co on the left made safety pins [useful things, they were] and the pub next door was called the 'White Lion', licensee Albert Lees. Next to that was John Wilson, butcher.
Peter

TO THE RIGHT OF THE DOUBLE DECK BUSES WAS AN ALTARPIECE OF VICTORIANA AS A MUSIC HALL: razed for a 'factory car park.
WHERE WAS THE VANTAGE POINT FOR THAT PHOTO?

Camp Hill

Don't know what happened there, but I was responding to the photo of the camp hill fly over. I remember it and remember going over it.....did the buses go over. I also recall it being demolished but was it as part of the ring road or about the time of having a racing circuit. Finally this is the road that goes to High Street Deritend isn't it towards Digbeth?

Hi Fergie
to answer your questions, the buses did go over it, you can see a couple of 'em in the photo.
When they built it, it was supposed to last for 10 years, in the event it lasted over 20!
It wasn't knocked down to accomodate the racing circuit, that came much later. It just got to the point where it couldn't handle the volume of traffic so it was demolished and replaced with a more efficient traffic light interchange.
you're right about the road, it is High Street but looking away from town towards Bordesley
Hope that clears it up
Jerry

Silly me I need to put my glasses on a sign of the times me thinks. I asked about the High Street as I wanted to be sure it was the same High Street referred to in Kelly's and Wrightons when researching my ancestor John Bartlett who had premises at 39 High Street Court 9 Deritend from 1839.

Heres one for Fergie.

Postied,
I bought a coloured copy of that painting from the Central Library, at a very reasonable price, many, many years ago and it hangs framed above my fireplace now.
Don't know if they still have copies to sell.
Might be worth an enquiry, Fergie, if you want one.
Will.

Oh you are good sports, mind you I didn't reckon on it looking that old, timber framed buildings, I can't wait to show the folks. Thank you I will be visiting Central Library soon will it be alright for me to print off to take with me.

The Digbeth Flyover.

PETER. I am very pleased I did not join the Motor Bike gang then.
WINSTON. Two smashing Photographs of the flyover, You know I had never driven over the flyover, nearest I got was driving under it from Cattel Road and turning right for the Bull Ring.
