Johnson William James -can you help find him?

Hi there,
I am trying to trace an ancestor called William James Johnson, known as 'Billy' born between 1880 & 1900. Details I know about him are

He had red hair
His father's name was Samuel.
He had a brother, Charlie
He was born in Scotland
He was a soldier-seargeant
Died in Palestine around 1928-1930
He was a Drum Major in a band
We think he was a friend of the Dicks family who were bakers till the 1930s in Erdington.
He had links through his soldiering to Walmer in Kent.

If anyone can shed any light on him I'd really appreciate it. I have a distant cousin who would be so happy to have any information, however tenuous.

Thank you so much,

Maggie
