As I see it for the mid 1800s the Golden Cross stood on the junction of the present day Bleak Hill, Perry Common Road, Short Heath Road, and Turfpits Lane. At the time Turfpits ran N but came to a dead end well before Oscott College.

Yes, agree,Pedro. Spent many afternoons waiting at the bus stop at the bottom of Bleak Hill to get home from school. Was always a scrum to get onto the bus (all girls too, I add!)

I wondered about the date of the building Pedro as the one in OMs aeriel view looks possibly 1930s. It being a replacement for an older pub on a different spot is helpful info. Thanks.

I don’t believe the claim in the article that the Bateman family are acknowledged for the opening of the Golden Cross public house is true. In the 1871 census the landlord at the Golden Cross was Jeremiah Cutler, and John Bateman was recorded living close by as a retired victualler.
There is also a recording in a 1866 directory of Jeremiah Cutler at the Golden Cross. The Cross was in existence sometime before 1857.
If we go back to the 1851 census John Bateman is down as a beer seller living in Turf pits, but no mention of the Golden Cross. Even further back in 1841 he is living in Witton and listed as an agricultural labourer.
Jerry’s Lane is recorded on the 1882 surveyed OS Map.
