Holidays spent in Wales as a child.

Jean, lovely thread and photos!

As a kiddie I never had a holiday in Wales but from about the age of 13 I started doing regular solo cycle trips into the Welsh mountains. At 14 I cycled all the way round the Welsh coast, Brum to Brum in 10 days sleeping in my little garden tent, and the Welsh mountain climbs stood me in good stead for my later cycle racing. I have written a little story, with a Brum connection, about those days and I'll just have to get round to finishing it one day, Graham.

I was totally impressed with the Isle of AngleseyJean. It reminded me very much of the Californian coast near to Carmel. There are some amazing properties along the main road on Anglesey with some rather exotic trees. The views across the water are stunning. My eldest brother Peter went to a boys camp at Benllech Bay many years ago.
 
Thanks Jennyann. We are finding the details of a cottage there for next year. Our friends have used this one for years and it has it's own little garden and is dog friendly. Jean.
 
On my late 50's cycle tour of Wales I also crossed the Menai Bridge into Anglesey making sure to visit the famous Red Wharf Bay. It's like a huge swimming pool, wonderful for the kids. Some nice photos here; https://www.cyclingnorthwales.co.uk/pages/red_whf_phot.htm

A recent visit to the places I spent my childhood holidays. Barmouth and Aberdovy. Going back in the spring for sure to find the place where we camped in Talybont. Jean.
 
I am sure they do Aidan. I still have little glasses etc from those days with Welsh ladies on. Can't wait to go back. Jean.

Fantastic times were had and I went back in September to try and find the spot but as time was short that day we did not succeed but will try again in the spring. In the first photo is uncle Harry, the secon Mr and Mrs Wilkins and Ivy Spencer our next door neighbour, the third Mrs Spencer, mom Mrs Wilkins my Mrs Blackwell and aunt Knell, the fourth myself in the wellies at the front and thje last dad and mom. On the third photo I am the little one at the back. We even took this dingy to the beach. Jean.

Here’s a couple of snaps taken in just such a holiday. This is my dad Dennis Chapman (49 Holte Road) having a wash with his Uncle Sonny Price, I believe on holiday in Llandudno. The old army tents and camping stuff were transported by lorry and the family travelled by motorbike and sidecar to the camp. The photo dates back to late 1920s I think.

I’ve just found a few more. Apologies for the quality. From the same camping trip. The younger boy is Dads brother Ken and I think Harold Brueton is the other chap on the left in the other pics.

OMG those are the holiday I was always on as a child and the Chapmans were our friends. Some more photo's of those fantastic holidays. Thank you for sharing yours with us Josephine.

Here are some more for you, one from the same camping trip of Harold and little Rosie Brueton with their parents Martha and Fred (also of Holte Road) and my Dad Dennis (the young boy).
the other photo is of Fred on his motorbike with Rosie and my Dad outside number 49 Holte Road. These camping pictures predate yours for sure (dad was born in 1926), but perhaps your parents knew my family around that time if they lived in Holte Road then.

Edna and Albert Lyndon 57 Holte road and aunt Nell and uncle Harry Stevens from 94 Holte road. Half of Holte road had been camping at Tallybont many years before I was born Josephine.

Ah, that brings back memories, Carol, especially that plank in the background of the second one. Walked a good way out there on that several times. Better than a pier!
