Viv: your newspaper cutting in Post #149 does show the same ruined site in November 1940.
Here is a clearer copy of the photo. The far right of the photo shows the remains of the building next to the Malt Shovel. In the middle of the photo is the Severn Street junction, with the ruins of the Acorn pub on the near corner, and the Grapes pub on the far corner. The Futurist Cinema and Telephone Exchange buildings are visible a little further down Hill Street.
That's really helpful. Thanks, Geoff. Can't say I'd want to be standing where that ARP/CD/Fireman/warden person is standing on top of the rubble. Expect this was the morning after the raid - are those fire hoses still lying on the ground ?
