Hello I am an Ex Brummie now living in N wales. I want try and trace my husbands HEWITT family tree. Grandad was John Hewitt b 1888
married to Ellen Sedgeley on 19.12.1911 he died approx 1940 or thereabouts.
They lived in Arthur Street,Small Heath.B10

From 1918 to 1935 John and Ellen Hewitt were at 26 Arthur Street (from electoral rolls).
In 1918 John was an also in the army, no 94813 in B company, West Yorkshire regiment.

Ellen seems to have been Sedgley, not King. Wedding registered 4th quarter 1911 Birmingham, volume 6d page 117. (A copy of the mariage certificate will give you their addresses at the time and both their of their fathers names and occupations.)

Births registered in the surname Hewitt, mothers maiden name Sedgley, since 1911:

I found no local births Hewitt - mother's maiden name King.

Here is a copy of John's WW1 army medals card, showing he was first a private in the South Staffordshire Regiment, number 136031.

Welcome to the forum.

In 1891 they are living 17 Green Lane Bordesley. John Hewitt (1888), his father is also John Hewitt, age 29, from Birmingham, and a baker's assistant. Mother Mary is 26 from Montgomery Newton?
In 1901 they are at 36 Rea Sreet Deritend and John senior is a shopkeeper (Baker Grocer).

My grandparents lived in Arthur Street in 1901.

I cant thank you enough. Someone in the family gave me the name King for the wife and I did come across Sedgley in records on the internet, so you confirmed my doubts. You have done in 24hours what I:D have been trying to do for months whats the secret.

I will now send for the marrige cert.
If his Fathers name is Joseph and wife is Sarah then I have found them already in a census in 1891 at 27 Arthur Street, when John was 3 years old. Just need confirmation. Thankyou, thankyou , thankyou.

I do not want to blow your mind but I have John and Ellens Marriage Certificate so it looks like we may be related.

They were married at St Gabriels Church 25 December 1911 John 23 ,Ellen 20 he a Driver ,she a Screw Turner.
They both give their address as 9ct 4h Barn St, Johns father Joseph. Boatman (my Gt Gt Grandfather) Ellens father John. Kettlemaker.

If you can confirm the link I have lots of info on the Hewitts going way back to early 1800s.
 
Yes this is the right family. I cant believe my luck with finding out so much info this week after joining this site only 24hrs ago.
I was about to send for their marriage cert. So where to we go from here.
John & Ellen are my husband Dennis Hewitts Grandparents. John had among his many kids George, and George married Eveleyn and they had my husband DENNIS.
But Dennis never met John, only Ellen when she went to live at Cotterills Lane, Stechford after JOHN died.
I was told by one of Johns sons who is still alive that he was a Bargee.
Also that he was buried in Yardley cemetary. I emailed the cememtary last week to find out where the plot is, but they cant find it under 1940 or 1941, as I thought he died in 1940. So have drawn a blank.
I am jumping up and down here with excitement and its dangerous at my age. So the next question is how do I get to share the information you have .Waiting in anticipation. My husband was brought up in Hockley in Brum in Brierley Street.,
 
Ive seen this hEWITT family, but although they lived in Arthur St, I think its the wrong family. I thought mine lived at 27, but have been told it was Number 26. Perhaps they still may be related, as families stayed close to each other in those days.
 
Hi Hewitt.

Great news about the link I can tell you now that I can trace us back to at least 1767 to Lighthorne a village in Warwickshire and we were boatmen from about 1840 to the early 1900s.

I think the best way to keep it going is through a PM which I am not sure how it works but I am sure some kind soul will tell us how as they do not like us to give out our web address for security reasons.

I thought I would send you Joseph and Sarah's marriage cert as a starter.

Thanks for that especially the cert. Can make all of it out except the top line is it St Andrews Church at Bordesley, Warwicks.
Cant wait to see what you send next. Are you Gertrudes son,or Violets, or am I not supposed to ask. You must be a 1st cousin of my husband Dennis.

Where to begin?
First of all you are right you have the wrong Hewitt family in Arther St as John aged three in 1891 was living at 27 Fazeley St Bordesley. and on the 1901 at 14 court No2 Lower Trinity St Bordesley his mother Sarah is a widow by this time and has seven children aged 24 down to 8 and also two lodgers.
The Hewitts in Arther St are another branch of our family but nearly all bakers, all will become clear when I get further back.

Yes that is St Andrews Small Heath.

Can you check the Remember Them thread on this site were you will find my Grandfather James D.O.W 1815 and I think your John down as Jack Hewitt.

The name you could not read is Elizabeth Oakes the church is St Peter & St Paul ( Aston Juxta) Aston.

I see that I have put James D.O.W 1815 that of course should read !915 in the first World War.

Here is Josephs Baptism record with brother George at St James the Less Ashted Row Birmingham the address is Oxford St in Digbeth and father George is down as a Steerer (Boatman) Sorry about the quality they do not Scan very well.

hockley they lived there in the forties and fifties
and that was very close to the cut [ the cannal ] there was barge people there. It was on the clissold st wharf they may be connected

Seeing as Howard James Hewitt was a Carter in the 1911 census I have checked Kelly's and in 1932 and 1933 there is a Howard Jas. Hewitt, Haulier, 17 Banbury Street.:)
