Henrys Stores

I can't remember the last time my Mom went in to the centre of Birmingham, she lives about 25 miles away and has done for years. I always wanted to take her in to town to show her the changes, some really nice like the area around by the canals and Victoria Square, but she's not well enough now.

Mom has started to open up about her life. Her father (my Grandfather) left home when he was just 15 years old and came down to Birmingham from Newcastle and worked as a waiter in the Midland Hotel on New Street where he met my Nan.

Thank you for responding, she can remember more from her childhood these days than more recent things, and think she's trying to reach out to people who might remember her from her past.

Thank you.
Morning B, sorry I don't have a correct name for you. People do talk more about their lives as they get older and we don't always realise what they have done or been through. My mum told me she worked in a hotel in Birmingham, probably as a kitchen maid, but I can't remember the name though, might have been the Midland. She did say that the cook made a delicious Queen of Puddings! Perhaps she worked alongside your grandfather! I wonder if there is a list of workers somewhere that would confirm where she worked.

hi and welcome..if you could give us the names of the streets or roads where your mom grew up in and her maiden name we may have some old photos of them to show your mom which would bring back memories for her

Hi Lyn,

My Mom has photos from her own Mom from where she grew up in Great Barr. Next time I'm over at her house I'll get them out of the loft for her. Good idea!

KInd regards.

Hi Catmum,

Just sat with my 81 year old Mom at home, looking through old photographs of Birmingham.

My Mom worked at Henry's in the late 1950's until about 1961. She tells me she was a window dresser there, her name is Carol. She moved on to Evans after Henry's, but she still has fond memories after all these years working in Birmingham City Centre and she was only 15 years old when she started working there.

Please get in touch.
Hi Catmum, Just saw your post. My late wife Maureen was a window dresser at Henry's late 50s & 60s. Henry's employed a few part-time Firemen in various jobs for which I was one. We got together and married in 1962. I have fond memories of Henry's it was a happy place to work and gave me extra revenue. Give your Mom my regards and see if she remembers Maureen Broadhurst as she was then.Screenshot_2026-01-29_112800.jpg

Hi, aggie2347, I'm afraid it wasn't my post you saw but a post by Birmingham196, easy to get the posts mixed up. My post was about visiting Henrys in the mid 60's, I hope she can remember your wife, that would be nice.
