help with a birth record

miss muffett

proper brummie kid
Can someone help me please?I have been trying for ages (years!) to find the mother of William Rollins born
Dec 1852 ,Ufton, warwickshire.Thought I had found her through this site a little while back, but was wrong! It was his aunt who was on the 1851 cencus where he was a ploughboy.
I know his father is John an ag.lab because this name appears on William's wed cert .He wed Elizabeth Berrick at St martins church 22 nd Dec 1878. They are my great x 2 grand parents and I know more about other members of his family than him.
William has an uncle John born 1829 Ufton. He wed Sarah Overton in 1854 and for a while thought he was William's father but...Unless they had the child before they wed perhaps but he doesn't appear to feature on cencus with them.See my doubts?
I am beginning to despair of ever finding his mother.Any advice gratefully received!

Miss Muffett

Can I firstly ask how you know William Rollins was born Dec 1852?.

If you have those details did you find a birth registration for him?

Also I am a little confused when you said he was a ploughboy on the 1851 census.

If you can give me those answers I will endeavour to search the sites I subscribe to.

Did William have any brothers or sisters.

On the 1851 census there is a John Rollins - Head - Ag.Lab born Oxford with wife Elizabeth born Lapworth and sons William aged 3 born Warwickshire, Lapworth and Charles aged 1.

This William is registered in Rawlins William Births Dec 1848 Stratford on A 16 489 I think. So remember all the variations in spelling of surnames.
With my Fenemore ancestors the husbands knew how to spell it but the wives who registered birth didn't so it came out with i's for e's and the number of n's varied etc

Many thanks for ideas. No birth certificate yet for William as I do not know who his mother was only his father.
As mentioned in my original message,the concrete things I know are;
from wedding certificate (22nd dec 1878) that states he is of full age and father was John Rollins,a labourer.
death certificate ie died 7th may 1908 age 54 years
cencus for 1901 .(only know about 1881 cencus details of ''Robbins'' family because of a contact on GR but no other info known yet.)
Been trying to work backwards ,but really need his mum's first name.
Williamjukes-maybe you are onto something with your info? Will look into it.

Miss Miffuett

What were the names of the witnesses at William and Elizabeths marriage - could they have been related to William.

Also children names of William and Elizabeth as there is a member on Ancestry with a public tree relating to William and Elizabeth Berrick married 1878 at St Martins - father of Willian is John - mother unknown.

Again - how do you know William was born Dec 1852?

There is another birth earlier but it is Coventry

William Rollins 4th qtr 1849 Coventry 16 404

I don't think this is the Lapworth one as the reg district would have been Solihull

I have nothing concrete that says born 1852.I have only cencus ''ages'',death cert, wed cert. The witnesses on the wed cert are Michael berrick(the brides father) and Mary Varnon.Don't recognise the last name at all.The ancestry person is most probably me!
Thank you all for your input,i am sure it will get sorted eventually.
p.s after a bit more detective work,Mary Varnon is in fact-Mary Varnham who was the bride's married sister.

Miss Muffett

When you posted that William was born Dec 1852 I presumed you had concrete evidence (i.e. birth registration) so couldn't understand why you hadn't requested a birth certificate for him.

All I would advise is that when calculating dates from census and other sources - marriage/death certificates (in fact any information) then do not take them as read - take them with a pinch of salt and keep an open mind. I am sure other members will tell you the same.

When researching my family all census records and marriage/death certificates pointed to my ancestor as being born around 1840/42. I took pot luck and sent for a birth certificate for someone of the same name being born 1837 although I was unsure, I thought this would at least eliminate him from the equasion.

Lo and behold this was my g g grandfather and the person I was looking for.

The name Rollins/Rawlins is turning out to be like Smith in the Ufton area !Thats one reason I have not a birth cert for
my great x 2 grandfather ,yet.
I have been waiting for a definate ''mother's'' name before sending for a birth cert, but I will put all the evidence
I do have and take it from there.
Thank you again ! miss muffett

Miss Muffett

I only wished I could have offered more help. Alas.

When you stated in your original post that William was born Dec 1852 I understood this to mean you had evidence of a birth registration. However I assumed/presumed - so one learns - never assume or presume.

Names are often mis-spelt -mis-pronounced - as most of us will have found out in our research I am sure.

Most families originated from one particular area and family names were passed down which also makes research difficult.

I wish you luck with your research.
