My ties to Birmingham go back to 1888 when my grandfather, Alfred Hope Drinkwater, left Aston for America at the age of thirteen. He attended Lozells School and the Church of Christ at Summer Lane and Geach Street. I'm looking forward to learning lots more about your city.

Welcome Grampy, I'm sure you will get all the help you need on here.

Welcome Grampy to the forum. Hope you find all you want here. A quick look at the 1881 census doesn't immediately show Alfred with the correct date of birth and coming from Aston, so, if you put more details in the correct section, then someone should soon be able to give you more information about areas of interest

I enjoy life in a small town called Warrenton which is about an hour's drive southwest of the District of Columbia where I spent my teen years.

Welcome grampy!
Alfred Hope Drinkwater, birth registered 3rd quarter 1876, Aston, volume 6d page 397.
You can sent to the registry office for a copy of the birth certificate with that information which should show parents details.

The 1881 census shows Alfred H. Drinkwater as 11 years old, but a careful look at the original indicates the recorder actually wrote 4, which corresponds to his birth record of 10th June, 1876. Thanks for taking the time to check. My real problem is to find the un-named father.

All the best,
Gordon

Thanks for taking the time to look up the birth record citation. Unfortunately Alfred's mother was not married and never disclosed the father's name. That rascal is really the primary objective of my search. No other records naming him have surfaced.

Have you tried Ancestry.com? I see he is listed under 'Selected U.S. Naturalization Records - Original Documents, 1790-1974' in Pennsylvania, and 'World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918' in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

If his mother never told who the father was, I think you're in for a difficult search!
Sadly, it might even have been a non-consensual union, and she might not have known herself.
