Golden Lion Cannon Hill

yes its a start but this is only to look at the state of the building and could just be a token effort after all the press regarding the loss of the crooked house  ... but after spending years visiting and photographing many empty and neglected buildings i know that just 5 years takes its toll but after over 20 years of neglect its going to be a big and costly project if it can be saved... i am not trying to be negative here just realistic in todays economic climate and lets face it we have heard all these promises before regarding other heritage buildings..also i think its owned by bcc in which case as the city is now bankrupt how will they pay for restoration...we can only wait and see but personally i think this is a case of too little too late...fingers crossed and everything else for this one as over the years i have seen it go from bad to worse

True Lyn but I can't imagine Historic England would pledge money if they didn't think there was some hope for the future.
So fingers crossed.
jan no one more than i would be happy if this wonderful building was saved...a few years back i contacted the council a few times but received not one reply so as you say fingers crossed

It's interesting that Mike's Historic England link in post #197, emphasises possible HE support for the purpose of protecting the historic fabric and/or where there is a structural need. And any application must be for work that needs to be done to reduce the risk that the property faces or to enable the risk to be reduced.

This gives me hope ! This building qualifies on several counts, if HE can be persuaded (that is, after the current HE supported survey and a plan of works prepared). Even if further support is given to simply reduce the risk, it's a step in the right direction.

I think the fact that the City coffers are empty, helps the Golden Lion's case. There's absolutely no way the Council will throw money at it now, after all these years. So it's down to others to pick up the project if they really want to preserve a significant historic building. The pressure's on.

To support the cause, I'm sure the Friends won't mind us sharing these photos from their FB page from March 2017.

thanks viv slightly different to the one i posted but it does show the inside of the pub...having now seen these videos i just cant understand why for over 20 years or so its been left to rot...this now looks doable to me but they need to get their fingers out and quick

Anyone heard if there's any progress on this ?
I can't answer your question but....I live in the same ward as Cannon Hill Park and the newsletter of one of our councillors has this:

Get involved with looking after Cannon Hill Park

The fledgling new and revitalised Friends of Cannon Hill Park group will hold their second meeting on Wednesday 28th February 6.30pm at The MAC. With the recent announcement of Historic England funding towards restoration of The Golden Lion inside the park but also the looming cuts to council services and staff, community involvement is all the more important to make sure we shape and maintain our open spaces and parks for the future.

The Red Lion Cannon Hill park a hot July heat haze day in 1995 on a UK visit. It was in good repair back then. A hazed view of the lake from the Red Lion.

This showed up on the Heritage Week Events this year
As you can't safely go in to the building, everything's outside but it's a history of the Golden Lion with something on what they plan on doing with it in future if they get more funding, I don't know if there's any degree of consultation involved there.
This will be from 6:30 - 7:30 pm outside the Golden Lion.

just a typo error mickyE post 233 and viv its the golden lion not the red lion...easily done

I see the Golden Lion made Central News last night. Birmingham Conservation Trust is working with a range of partners to try to secure a future for the building. They have asked for the public's support to progress with a full restoration and are asking people to get in touch with stories they may have about the building. Link below for the ITV X site with the full story and pictures below:
