Ghost signs of Birmingham

Hi Jim. I can't find the thread, do you know the title of the thread and I'll have a look and insert a link for you. Thanks. Viv.

Engaged brain! Herewith old thread.

Thanks Jim but I don't seem to be able to see it - just get a title blue box in the post. Can others see it? Viv.

William Powell and Sons stayed in business in those premises until 2008 when they were taken over by a firm called J M Osborne. Not sure if that was when they firm finished in Birmingham though. It now operates from Banbury. The Carr's Lane site was bought in 1860.
There is an interesting video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRTfWZRCQsU

Thanks for posting - very interesting.
Wow - the price of those guns in what I guess was the 60's?

Lovely Froth! Never looked closely at the Burton's logo but if you zoom in it says "Montague" next to Burton's and underneath 'The Tailor's of Taste' And so nice to see its still there. Viv.

The years of looked at that sign, never noticed the "Montague" part till today.

A BSA sign above a shop on Slade Road, Erdington. The shop below is now an opticians. Viv.

Found this on Birmingham Library photos.

Biddle and Webb popular auctioneers building on Icknield Square. This building was formerly the home of Lesbrooks Engineering Company.

Posts #279-282 are copied here from another thread. John's photo in #279 is probably one of many ghost signs to survive along Birmingham's canal side simply because they're generally less accessible. Hoping we can capture more signs. So if you're out and about along the canals and see a good example, please take a photo and post it here. Thanks. Viv.

Thanks Ell. Shows there are still many around - but they need recording before they disappear, especially the ones painted on brick. Those cut into stone like this Co-op transport one on Great Brook Street (there are 3 of them too) are likely to be more durable - fortunately there are lots of these around. Viv.

Hi, I notice your pics are png files which don't enlarge on some computers. It would be better to save them as jpg and then post them.

Welcome to the forum lawllb. Those are two great ghost signs you've posted, thank you. I take it they're still visible today? Enjoy the forum. Viv.

Viv

The initials are BCS I would imagine as it was a Birmingham Co-op Society shop at one time.
