Gedcoms

What do I need to do to read a Gedcom which is being sent to me on a CD? Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks.:confused2:

Judith,

Import it into a genealogical database such as Brother's Keeper, Legacy, Family Tree Maker, etc. Almost all have the facility to import GEDCOMs. It's a text-based format, but looking at it in WordPad or Notebook won't tell you very much!

EDIT: I should have added that if you already have one of these containing data beware that you could overwrite some of that data! So set up a fresh empty tree before the import in this case.

If you are subscribed to Ancestry, fmp, genealogist and I think genes reunited, etc you can upload it to those sites to get a family tree online

Maurice, Are you able to take me through the steps. I have Legacy on my computer now and if I want to import a gedcom from family search.org how do I do it as I have never done this before?

Hi Judith,

Click on File then Import From and then GEDCOM File and you will then be able to find the location to which you have saved the file (or a CD if it is on CD). The rest should be a case of following the instructions.

If, however, you already have data in Legacy, you will need to create a second database and I'm not sure whether the free version will let you do this. If this is the case, by the time you get back to me I will have found out if you can do this. (I don't use Legacy myself as I much prefer the cleaner screen layouts of Brother's Keeper!).

EDIT: Yes, it does. Just click on File and then New Family File and give if a name, e.g. Bloggs. Then it will open a new blank family and you can then import the GEDCOM.

EDIT 2: Oh and if it asks you if you want to assign a source click on the "Don't Assign" button!

Hope that helps!
