Further to my previous post regarding Stoneleigh villa's. I am looking for information on a baptism of a Frederick Smith who was born in 1876 and resided in Church lane Aston in 1891. I cannot find the 1881 census for the Smith family. Can anyone help please.

hi...a bit more info may help such as who fredericks parents were as smith is a very common name

lyn

Hi Lyn, Fredericks parents were William Smith and Matilda but on the 1891 and 1901 census it shows Matilda married and as head of the family. I haven't been able to locate a Marriage for William and Matilda therefore have now maiden name.

If it shows Matilda as Head then I assume there is no sign of William?

Answering my own question - on 1891 she is described as "widowed".

This throws up a problem. There are children called John, Joseph and Frederick with mother Matilda but... father is a Henry Smith

On the marriage certificate for both Frederick it shows father's name as William. I wonder if the father's name was Henry William? It's a mystery. Thank you for your help.

The births of John, Joseph, Frederick and Florence are all registered in Aston with mmn White but... the Matilda with Henry in 1881 has two other children
Edith also reg in Aston with mmn White but the other daughter doesn't seem to be reg with mmn White.

She's possibly Louisa May.

I haven't a maiden name for mother, I have been looking for a 1881 census with Matilda born Maldon Essex

She appears to have been born in Danbury, Essex. Possibly daughter of a Samuel White and a Mary Collins. In 1851 with grandmother Ann Collins.

I was looking for the eldest girl with Henry and Matilda to try to decide if Henry and William were the ame person. She was called Sarah and boorn in Brighton so may not have been Matilda's

Strangely, on the 1901 census there is a Gertrude Parsonage with Matilda, listed as a niece but she appears to be the daughter of Sarah (Sarah Jane), the eldest daughter. On Sarah's marriage in 1881 her father is listed as William.

Also in 1871 Matilda's husband seems to be listed as John?

Seeing that Matilda's birthplace was listed as Danbury, Essex (relatively obscure) I searched for a Matilda born late 1830s with that birthplace on 1851 and 1861 census. In 1851 there was a Matilda White and looking at the births for her children there were matches for all of the ones listed after and including Alice (there were a couple before).

A big thank you to everyone that helped me with the Smith family tree yesterday, without you all I would still be searching for the correct census returns. As you can imagine I looked at many census but as the husband's names were different instantly dismissed them. Another lesson learned!!
