Forster Street

Brookfields Lad

master brummie
I am looking for pics and/or maps about Forster street from the 1930's to the end of the second world war. I know Forster street is still in the Vauxhall area of Brum.

Is it possible to find out who was living at an address in Birmingham post 1931 census?

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Bob whats the address?

My mother lived at 3/17 Forster street.

I was wandering how one went about finding who lived at addresses throuhout the city. E.g A relative may have lived in Smith street (number unknown) Anytown. How could I go about and find this information?

Thanks

hi Bob
You could check the online electoral roll at https://www.midlandshistoricaldata.org/ although you have to
pay, i think you can pay £5 for so many searches. I think it now goes up to 1960. But don't forget this will
only show people of voting age in the household. I hope this helps. Or if you have a name and the street
i am sure someone on here can help.

Hi again Bob
I just did a bit of work on the address you gave and came up with this info

in 1945 to 1950 at 3/17 was Anne and Henry Styche. Then in 1955 at 3/17 it was Arthur and Mary James

Then in 1960 at 3/17 was William and Violet c Taylor.

I hope this helps

regards Stars.

Hi Corolina
I just went on the historical site to get
the info for Bob and i see they have changes the site page.
i don't know, you just get used to something and they change it.

Thanks for the info.

Something doesn't quite tally though.

My grandparents James and Violet Taylor lived at 3/17 Forster Street in 1938. You say that;

The Styche family lived there in 1945.
The James family lived there in 1955.
The Taylor family (my grandparents) lived there in 1960.

If our facts are correct (I got mine from my parents marriage certificate) why did the Taylors return to there old house twenty two years later?

It's all good fun isn't it.

Thanks for your time.

1939 James and Violet Taylor listed at 3 May Place,Forster Street
1960 William Taylor and Violet C Taylor were listed at 3 back 17 Forster Street

Hi Bob
Here is a copy of 1960 electoral roll for James and Violet Taylor. I can't find them
at this address in 1938. The earliest i can find 3/17 Forster street is 1945 with the Styche family.
The number 17 Forster shows up as early as 1920, but no 3/17. Keep at it Bob i am sure
you will solve it.

Forster Street was a little side street that ran from Windsor St to Lawley St at the Vauxhall Rd end of Windsor St. On the photo it shows the Windsor St - Forster St junction in the 60's, the OS map is pre 1900. The road still remains today, but it is all commercial property.

I see how easily it is to get confused. In my family there is a William known as John, a John who was known as Jack another William known as Bill.

Problem solved. Thanks for the time and effort put in to obtain these results.

My next query is; James and Violet Taylor were living in Irving Street in 1960 but I have no idea where. Any ideas how I could find out?

Thank you.

1945-1960 at 8 back 161 Irving Street
James and Violet Taylor. (1960 it states Violet B Taylor)
1945-1947 has the addition of Frederick T J Taylor

Hello carolina - have just found this thread and wondered if you could also help me in my search (for what is probably the impossible) photos and map of the area of 34 Forster Street, My gt Grandmother ran a sweet shop! Matilda Osborne - there from possibly 1917 through to 1930's when her daughter Matilda Hemmings took over, Matilda Hemmings lived in 90 Palace Road prior to the take over (is Palace Road anywhere near Forster Street?) I've managed to get copies of the electoral roll from the B'Ham History site so that has helped but would realy like some photos and map to add to my Family Tree Book - what a garbled message - hope you can help - Val former Heath Street resident (1950's)

Val, I think Palace Road was in Small Heath. Unfortunately, I do not have any photos, but I am sure someone will be able to put a map on here for you. Good luck. Carol

Heres a map with the two locations marked, Forster St in red and Palace Rd in blue. A distance of less than two miles as the crow flies and easily walkable. I'm sure Mike will be able to come up with a more detailed map of the two locations.

The electoral roll & the 1921 kerrys directory list George Osborne's shop as no 32. I have marked what i think is no 32 in red on the c 1910 map below. Although forster St is still there, none of the buildings are. No 90 Palace Rd is shown in blue on map below. that still seems to be there , as shown as house with brown door at https://goo.gl/maps/cfrK3 .

In the 50s-60s we, Jennings family, lived at 55 Palace Road, Small Heath, Bham 10 top end & Bordesly Green Bham 9 at the other end, opposite the shop, where mom would send me over to the shop, with the money wrapped up in a note.
