hi sue on the 1921 census we have a james hooper aged 67 says married but no sign of his wife..living with him is his son in law archibald rutherford (born in glasgow)..his daughter edith annie rutherford and 2 grandsons age 4 and 3

am i correct in thinking that the birth certificate you have is for another child of archibald and edith annie (nee hooper) ?

not sure if you are tracing the hoopers or rutherfords but are you on ancestry as both the rutherfords and hoopers records going back are on there including the 1916 marriage cert for archibald and edith and also where achibald is buried ?

my link is to do with hooper, my husbands maternal line , the birth certificate is his grandad's and his mother is listed at this address,

Ronald is my husbands grandfather, trying to trace that side i could not find any record of Constance past the 1939 register, so we ordered his birth certificate, which gave me this address, however as you can see it stated "servant as well !
hence me asking you guys ! also not knowing if this was her home or where she had worked, that i only had her name to go on !
question!....why don't her name appear on the paperwork? i assume its because she is working elsewhere ? and she would be registered there ? is that correct?
Thankyou for all your help it is much appreciated !

I assume that after the 1911 census she must have become a "live-in" servant. So in 1921 she should be somewhere but the trouble is some people may not have registered all their servants. Plus the spelling may be wrong or the transcription.
It looks as if she came home to Mom and Dad (James and Annie) to give birth - she probably lost her job n-being pregnant and unmarried in 1924.

ok, that makes sense, but 1911 would make her 8 years old ?? would she have been working ? or in school ? at least ive found out her parents so i can know carry on with the branch.... you never know .....might stumble across something while doing this .....
But yes, totally understand where you are coming ... in tracing my own grandfather's military records he lied about his age, did not take his middle name and no next of kin (apparently a very common protocol) and then some of the records were destroyed in the blitz !

She is on the 1911 - I think with parents. Not a servant. Astoness found that one.
I meant between 1911 and 1921 - some maids only 11 or so I believe.
Will look again later

From the 1901 census James and Annie have several children. I started checking where they were on the 1921 census and struck lucky with daughter Florence

In 1920 Florence marries a George James from Derbyshire. (His younger brother Albert later marries Constance).
Florence marriage cert.jpg

In 1921 she is living in Derbyshire and on the census her and her husband have 2 visitors. Annie Hooper and Constance Winifred May Hooper
1921 Annie.jpg

So we now have Constance on the 1911 and 1921 censuses and 1939 register. Where Annie is again with Constance

thanks so much for taking the time to investigate further Jan, its much appreciated , that solves the mystery of Annie and Constance not on the census with James
and Lyn yes ill make i read post 25 as well
brothers ! i come across "james " a couple of times now , they must have been close family friends as a Esther James signed as a witness when annie and james got married
also any idea what the local papers in that area was, at the time?, i always find those to be quite helpful and informative as well
if i find a article i like the fact i get to know a little bit more about them, they are not just a name then. (if that makes sense)

thanks again
sue

I enjoyed the challenge
It looks as if both Florence and Constance married into the James family. So that would give a close connection.

makes perfect sense to me sue...newspaper articles can be so useful and in some cases have solved family mysteries...many stories were covered by newspapers all over the country so when you search the newspaper archives just put in the name of the person you are looking for and where they lived and see what turns up
