Spargone's map on post #29 shows the tram terminus in the roadway, just short of the Birmingham / Sutton boundary (which also defines the location of the later extention to Florence Road. Also shown is a 'Waiting room', provided for intending passengers - which is still there, having been unused for decades is now a barbers shop.

If my information is correct this flyer, which appears in Erdington Vol II by Peter Drake and Marian Baxter, was printed in 1900. This might explain the delay experienced by the writer of the letter in Pedro's cutting.

I have looked through all the relevant trades directories that I could find (although the originals are missing, one of the members of the research group at the library had photographed them all). I found that the shops were in existence at Broadfields Parade from the 1925/26 edition so it would have been at least a year earlier when the area was surveyed. I am presuming that the new tram terminus was incorporated into the scheme at the same time, so before 1924.

Looking at this B&W photo, the tram terminus waiting room building shown in post #32 used to have a portico attached to its front (see blue dot on Streetview attached). Douay Road bears off to the right.

I think that building is a gas regulator building that had public loos either side of it.

That’s interesting Lyn, on the map it is labelled as a waiting room on the map. I wonder when it was originally built? Maybe it was for the trams. I recall it in the late 60’s as public loos through the two doors either side and in the middle, it was used by the gas works as a regulator house. It certainly did have that nice portico on the front, which is overkill for a utility building, so maybe there was a change of use.

hi mort just noticed in 2022 it was called the gas station micro bar so it does look as though it has been used for several purposes...be interesting to find out when it was built..difficult to say but maybe the 30s

Thanks Lyn. Looking from above it does seem to be the right building as marked on that old map too. Sometimes the map makers got it wrong, sometime they got it wrong deliberately as a test of copy-write breach too.
