I don't remember all them cans during the war, especially vegetables, although we had a decent size garden and our Dad grew our own veg and some fruit plus kept hens for eggs but not to eat - the hens I mean. Eric
The suggestion that it's a weeks supply of food makes me think it's about the 40s/50s. Later nuclear attack advice suggested a 14 day supply. Expect more had become known about fallout in the 60s/70s.

Was there some advisory notice about removing the internal doors and leaning them against the wall and placing a settee in front. This would suffice a s a civilian nuclear bunker. I have a feeling we were told to ‘white wash’ the windows too.
