MY FRIEND AND I TODAY WERE DISCUSSING THE PROBLEM OF THE PRESENT DAY DESERTERS FROM THE ARMED FORCES IN IRAQ. HE CAME UP WITH THE SOLUTION THAT THEY SHOULD DO WHAT THEY DID IN THE 2ND. WORLD WAR, THAT IS SHOOT THEM. I SERVED NEARLY FOUR YEARS IN THE ARMY DURING AND AFTER THE WAR AND HAVE NEVER HEARD THEN OR SINCE OF EXECUTIONS DURING THAT PERIOD? HAS ANYONE HEARD ANY STORIES OF SUCH THINGS HAPPENING?. GEFF

No British - General Eisenhower and the Execution of Eddie Slovik for desertion in World War 11

In total in WW2 49 men were executed for Desertion
One in the USA, and Forty Nine worldwide
None in Great Britain
Sorry for not being clear on the matter

That’s O. K. Cromwell –

There are many sad stories out there, but the story of Eddie Slovik aged 24 is a particularly sad one - executed for desertion–was originally buried in Oise-Aisne in a section reserved for disgraced soldiers. However, because it was his wife’s dying wish – his remains were brought back to the States in 1987 and buried in Michigan. Seven U.S presidents have been petitioned for his pardon but none have yet - The story is well documented if anyone wanted to read it.

Very Pleased to hear at last,
that the 300 odd soldiers SAD
are now at long last going to be pardened
not before time too O0

Quite right Dennis. The shooting of those men was a disgrace, if it was today, they would be given hospital treatment, not shot.

about time this goverment did something we agree with.a full pardon for ww1 soldiers.we now have traiters in this country who now need sorting out.treason i call it.
