Mr Gillam must have moved to the road when it was newly built. For many new residents, I expect having a garden at the front and back of the house was a new responsibility.

Sadly, like so many front gardens, this front garden is now paved over for off-street parking.

I recall the Council Housing Department used to have a competition for the best front gardens

Yes, Mort there were municipal garden competitions. Kingstanding seems to have had quite a few successes. Colindale Road had another success in 1953 with A H Elford winning for his/her rock garden.
