Hi from Australia. Looking for info for a Charles Thomas Clarke b 1861 Birmingham and died 1st Jan 1940 (knocked down in blackout by bus). In 1883 he migrated to Oz, married had one child (my grandmother). Family returned to Birmingham sometime before 1891 Census. Marriage broke up, in 1891 Census they are living apart. He is with his family at 57 Prescott Street and Elizabeth and Amy Clarke are at 25 Court Camden Street. Marriage broke up and Elizabeth and Amy returned to Australia in 1900 where they both had quite adventurous lives for those times, living in Nth Qld and Papua New Guinea. Trying to find out if he found a new partner/wife in Birmingham in those years. Nothing has come up on DNA data bases suggesting this. Was living with his brother when he died. Seems sad as he had 7 grandchildren when he died whom he had never seen.

Hi Daphnie - well done on starting a new thread.
Do you have an exact birth date for him?
If so we can look more easily on the 1939 register.
If not we can still search.
The name of his brother might help as well.

Is this him? Age slightly out and also says Thomas Charles but knocked down in the blackout January 1940

He's at the Durham address on the 1939 Register listed as Tom C, with his brother (Victor) William.

Sorry, there is a William Clarke of the right age at 148 Durham Road. I didn't notice the different number, doubt he is the brother then as he dies in London.

A couple of possible sightings on the censuses for Charles after 1891.

Most likely is listed with a Poly/Polly Clarke in 1911 and 1921. In 1911 he is listed in Bham as Thomas b1862 Hckley (sic), a carpenter and in 1921 in Bham again as Charles S b1860 Birmingham, a carpenter.

There is also a Thomas Clarke, a carpenter, of the right age in Yardley listed with an Emma and her 2 children.

Even if he is the latter then I doubt he married her as she is back to her old name in 1911.

Thank you. I found too many T Clarkes to be certain. He and my gt grandmother never divorced, but she married again in Australia in 1903, said she was widowed, which after many years of searching we found to be untrue. He must have been in touch with his daughter as she received news of his death in 1940. She was living in the Trobiand Islands of Papua New Guinea. Have a photo which we believe his him, but not sure.

I think william (Victor) is in Middlesex on the 1939. So not sure why Daphne thinks he was living with his brother. As she put in post #1
His Death Certificate and Coroner's Inquest says he is living at 29 Durham Road, Sparkhill. My cousin gave me the info re boarding with his brother from where I don't know. Victor and Oliver are certainly down south by then. The 1939 Register is certainly him. He was widowed by then. His wife died here in Brisbane in 1937. I'm sure his daughter would have written to him about it. Thank you all.

1891 Census, if searched on Ancestry, is transcribed incorrectly. In the family there is an entry for Charles O aged 9, but if you look at the original transcript you can see it is Charles T aged 29, Carpenter/Manager. FindmyPast has the correct transcribed entry.

Do you know who registered the death?
