just had another look at the two links to his site and all the photos are taken by john ball who was born in birmingham in 1940 and how refreshing to read that he does not mind any of his images being saved and posted on the net or even in a book so long as he is acknowledged..now thats what i call sharing....must leave him a message of thanks on his web page...

Lyn I have also emailed him and congratulated him and said I am sure he would be welcome as a member of this forum and perhaps someone could help with his Birmingham ancestors. Just a bit of luck really finding it.

John has a great site. What is quite strange is we seem to be neighbours. We must have crossed paths in Morrisons and other places many a time

Hello Everyone,

I'm John Ball (aka JLB) whose 'Images of Birmingham' webpages you've been talking about. Carolina invited me to join you and make myself known. Thanks Carol.
Lyn, I was born and brought up in Winson Green, and worked at Dudley Rd Hospital till 1974 when I moved to Wales. I now live in Brecon.

Glad you like my photos of Brum.

Cheers, John

Hi JLB

Welcome to you and let me add my congratulations to the rest on an exemplary site. Where did you work in Dudley Rd hospital in 1974 because I was in and out of there all the time as we used to supply the skips to WBHA at that time. If you were anywhere near the compactor yard by the engineers workshops then we might have bumped into each other at sometime.

Phil, From 1964 to 1970 I was a radiographer - working in the X-ray Dept, and then from 1970 till '74 I worked in the School of Radiography.

John

Great pictures John. What's amazing is how random the compositions are, with no particular point of view. They make me wonder why they were taken. Were they taken with archiving the changing city in mind at the time? BTW, I'm a Winson Greener too - Wellington Street.

The view from John's house, from his site and a view from my house in the snow. I'm rushing off to the dentist now John, down Llan Faes but I will send you an email later John

I suppose they do look random, although there must have been some logic to my choice of viewpoints at the time. As far as I recall, I was trying to show as much of each street as possible with as few shots as possible. I was aware when I planned the shots that much of old Brum would be lost in the 1960s' redevelopment, and I wanted to record them for my own satisfaction and enjoyment. My original plan was to begin by photographing every street inside the new Ringway - and to follow this with shots of all the streets outside the ringway but inside the route of the 'Inner Circle' (no. 8) bus route. I achieved the first part of the plan, but sadly, I never embarked on the second part.

Then we might have met as we were responsible for disposing of a several x ray machines over the years from Dudley Rd Hospital and the other hospitals in the WBHA area..

Great that you had he forethought then, John. You certainly set yourself a task and I'm very glad you got as far as you did. I tried similar projects and never got half as far in an age when photography is so much easier and affordable.

Like them John? LIKE THEM!!?? Someone posts some absolutely UNIQUE and priceless pictures of old Brum and hopes we like them? What a gentleman and scholar you are John Ball. I am gobsmacked in the extreme, and really can't believe it. This to me is my Staffordshire Hoard. Pure gold, every one. Thank you, thank you, three bags full. Some will adorn the Alleyways Thread before you can say Slaney Street! Eat your heart out Alton Douglas...and a Radiographer from Dudley Rd eh? I was in the Labs at the Matty and did a lot of work with the Dudley Rd folk...You might have come across Colin Smith (Histology) or Kenneth Hughes (the overall Lab Manager) ...when he retired, Ken became one of those Birmingham History Ambassadors, who went to overseas "do's" at the Council House and entertained the visitors with our City history...RIP Ken wherever you are...

Congratulations and welcome John on a truly marvelous site, enjoyed your photos immensely. I am wondering that on your walks have you taken a photo of the corner of Navigation Street and Hill street where the Guinness clock was above Chetwyns shop?

Bob, all the photos I have are on my website. One of the shots included in Walk 4 is taken looking along Navigation Street towards the Guiness clock, but the clock is in the distance and the air was rather misty.

Thanks for the photo's Richie, I do so like to look at photos of what would have been my youth, had I not been in the army, but as I was I did spend a great deal of my youth around railway stations, especially New Street and Snow Hill.
