City Centre Photographs

There's something wrong with this picture. Download it and zoom in. There's a white faced building with the words "Sheffields Ltd. Head Office" visible. Slightly to the left of this and a little lower is a shadow image of half of the building with a "To Let" sign above it. It should be possible to place the street if someone has an address for Sheffield's head office but it shouldn't be assumed that the picture is absolutely real.

We do, apparently it's Barwick Street, but that doesn't fit in with the Pub location. (Phil and mikejee said this wam, and I'm not one to argue with THOSE experts...)

Up to about 1892 the head office was 9 upper priory, but from 1895 it was in Barwick St. There seems to be no pub corresponding to that in barwick St. In upper priory the bulls head woulf be in about the right position, but it is not on a corner as shown in the photo

I wonder if the date on the photo is wrong? Could it be that there was a pub on the corner of Church St Barwick St before the Grand Hotel was extended that was in 1893 wasn't it? Anybody got a Kellys for 1890?

I thought that originally wam, then I realised that Sheffields were the bill board owners, so that may be a false trail. I had thought that the picture would have been taken at the back of the markets for some reason. I personally don't doubt the picture is real.

On further consideration it may be Barwick st.
I am not quite sure exactly where Sheffield's were in Barwick St ,. I think it was between livery st & church St, but am not clear which side of the road. However the map dated 1889, but probably slightly earlier, shows the Grand already right up to the corner, and this was definitely before Sheffield's moved to Barwick St. There is Nock's hotel on the corner of Church st, opposite the Grand. This is variously named in Kellys as The Commercial Hotel, and later the Colmore Hotel. Its address was 16-18 church St, and this could be the relevent pub if sheffields was on the north side between church st and Livery St

Hi mikejee, I know this may not be in line with your post but I am interested in wereabouts of 6 LOWER PRIORY if any maps are around or if any one knows were it was situated with in the City ? My reason it was the home & work place of my familyback in 1851. Thanks for a great Forum Guys ;o))

Lower Priory, off the other side of Old Square, is shown on the c 1889 map below. I think no 6 is the building marked in red, though there is a slight possibility it was the next one up going towards Dalton St (depending on which street the corner buildings were numbered on) According to the directories, Elizabeth Jenny, piece broker, was listed there in 1855. In 1858 it is listed as no 5 lower Priory, though the numbering in those days and its recording was not always very repeatable. the 1862 Corporation directory seems to have Elizabeth Jewney as between 5 & 6.

Smashing find Carolina. I really enjoyed looking at the photographs and they took me back in time as I left Birmingham in 1964, so they were of Brum as I knew it in those days. I also liked the Handsworth map which I could relate to, having grown up there. Looking at the names of the roads which were familiar, especially those that led to Handsworth Park and the Grove Lane Baths, was very nostalgic. Thanks for posting.
