They were our favourite treats from Baines the Bakers. I realise now the choc-a-malts were probably slices of malt loaf covered in milk chocolate and the choux cakes were all pointy-shaped and absolutely full of cream. I tried to make the choc-a-malts a couple of years ago but they didn't turn out very well; I think they must have been made in individual molds. They weren't as bad for your health as the choux cakes, but then again, if you were to shove a choux in front of me, it wouldn't last long!

Choc-o-Malts

Harborne, I have fond memories of these choc-o-malts, they were flat, squares of malt loaf covered in chocolate mmm in my day they cost 3d old money, as you say from Baines, don't remember any other cake shops selling them. I used to buy mine either from Baines, Newtown Row, or the Baines on Aston Cross.

It's a pity we can't still buy them isn't it. I'm glad you remember the price because I had no idea. Flip! 3d for a cake and I think it was about 8d for a loaf!

Loved Baines bread. Queued up for ever for bread at Baines on
Stockland Green following WW2. I remember the Malted Chocolate slices
too. I also remember their Pineapple Creams, Cream Horns, Maids of Honour, Vanilla Slices and Merangues especially. Now, I'll start thinking about the Kunzles cakes I liked. Yummmm.

Pineapple creams YUMMY and a soft Bun with cream running through the middle yummy yummy I can't remember what it was called. yum all gone

I don't remember the buns Catkin but I remember the pineapple creams. Yum yum.

Forgot

I'd forgotten all about those Choco Malt cakes, they were fantastic. The Choux Cakes? do you mean Cream Horns with the artificial cream?
Our mom worked at Baines on Newtown Row, then Hunters Road she often brought cakes home.

Yes, pineapple creams too; now you're making my mouth really water!

Rod it was the Hunters Road one we used to use as we lived above. The choux cakes could have been called cream buns, I'm only calling them choux now because I realise that was the pastry which was used, so it could have been them right enough. If it was, mmmmmmmm!

Chocolate eclairs were made with choux pastry, and when my kids were tiddlers I used to make profiteroles for them, really just posh choc eclairs.:)

I've been looking for the traditional pineapple creams that we all grew up with, with the green bits on top, but can't find any anywhere. Does anyone still sell them? The modern day version is horrible!

A circle of bun mixture folded over and cooked then parted along the fold and jam & cream put in was called Devonshire Split, does it ring a bell, they were my favourite!. Len.

Len they sell similar cakes to those in ASDA, where they have also started selling the choux buns and they're just as delish as they used to be.
