Chip shops

II preferred 'scallops' to conventional shaped chips. However, they were rarely served at home so I often made them myself. They were a delight when applied with salad cream, rather than HP or Daddies sauces.
 
Yes, fish and six penn'orth of chips, wrapped in newspaper. The smell when you unwrapped them was wonderfull. We called those batter bits "scratchings".
Another delight was "scallops", they were potatoes, cut in slices and dipped in batter.
baz i had forgot about them we called "scollops"they were more filling i think than chips. 2 of them and a piece of fresh roe in batter.
 
Another chip-related memory just popped up.
If you ordered three pennorth of chips at Everetts, our local, they would twist a piece of newspaper into a funnel shape to hold them. It was great, when you'd finished the chips, to tear the bottom of the funnel off and suck out the vinegar.
I shudder to think where the newspaper came from !

I shall always remember once I was asked to determine a flash point ( temperature above which it can ignite) for an frying oil for a firm in Hull. Phoned them several times to give them the results and could not get through. Several days later finally got through and said I had been trying to phone them and the reply was "that would have been when the factory was burning down"
 
One of the best chippies in Paignton had a serious fire last year. A bad fire as it damaged places either side and flats above. I was not there, been retired a good few years now. I think the chippy owner is a Midlander - Brummie possibly.
At one time 55 was the statutory retirement date - for whole time and retained (part-time) personnel - although I stayed a little longer for admin changes which were taking place at the time. Now things have changed, it is the same as any other employment. I am not sure that it is a good idea given the strenuous work often required. But that's the way it is in these days of equality and other factors.
 
My gosh I have been gone to long when I was a kid we would go to Northfield swimming baths use our free pas then when we left walk across the street to the chipy and get a six of chips with a bag of scratchings then sit on top of the parking garage at the Black Horse Pub.
There use to be a chip shop on the side road next to Vale Onslows the motor cycle store in Mosley ? that smelled the very best
 
I certainly recall that chippy in Kyotts Lake Rd, very old fashioned chip range and the guy cooked chips in beef dripping.

As all chips should be cooked , though sadly not in Birmingham and more, and, from the taste of them, not even at the BCM. I can recommend an excellent chippy in Otley in Yorkshire for those who like proper chips
 
I did hear that the reason Chippysstarted using oil to fry the fish & chips was because the EU banned Beef Dripping after the Mad Cow disease outbreak.
 
I don't think that is true, there are a number of chip shops who still do. You can still buy beef dripping, works well when making Yorkshire Pudding
 
I think it is possible that, at the time, the scare put some off using it. If you know of any that still do in/Birmingham area, I would love to know.

But we all made it even with the newspapers!
 
They tasted lovely even with the Print on them.Just asked at the chip shop why he doesn't use Beef dripping.He said the oil is half the price.But must say since these Polish took it over you have to wait all the time in the queue,They're so nice the Fish & Chips

Beef dripping is still used in a chippy in Norfolk , unfortunately my wife cannot eat them as the young lady is vegetarian
