My great-grandfather (on the left) who lived in Witton worked as a travelling salesman for Sunlight Soap and then as a Chemists Traveller. My grandfather is the gentleman on the right. :) Unfortunately, I don't know where the photo was taken.

 
Great Photo and the others dotted about, told you we would like them and you thought otherwise:)

Don't even mind if you put a photo up of yourself they proved that when I put mine up

The impressed writing on the bottom of the photo says (I think) ?? Moore, Belle Vue Studio, West Gorton.

In the background there appears to be a display of photos so maybe the photo was taken outside the photographers studio.

West Gorton is in Lancashire so it may be near their place of employment. E.
 
What a great photo, I love these old photo's. I know this is a bit sad but look at that lovely old lamp post!

Hello All ...... and thank you so much for the super information about grandad's photo.

Eric - I hadn't noticed the display in the background before - thank you for pointing it out as I tend to just look at the people and not the surroundings. That's something I really must try and do with my other photos to see if there are any clues I can find :) I thought the writing said Corton as well - no wonder I couldn't find anything :D Thanks again.

Alf - I will never get my housework done on Wednesday now :D Thank you for the super links which will keep me quiet for ages. We took the children to the aquarium place in Liverpool last year and decided while we were there we would do a quick detour (as we always seem to do when we are out :D ) and drive through Ellesmere Port. Wow, it's a beautiful place - just as if we were stepping back in time. I have never managed to sit down and do any reading on Sunlight soap and Unilever so these sites will be brilliant for me to find out a bit of history, etc.

MomaP - I know what you mean about the lampost. Much better than the moder equivalent that we have nowdays :)

Brummie Nick - What a fab piece of information and thank you so much. I did try looking for Nostroline when I first saw the photo but had no luck with it. Our family tree does stretch over to Norfolk so the museum will definitely be on the list of places to visit when we get there (hopefully soon if I can persuade hubby). It would be great to see the product that they were actually selling :)

HelloEveryone - I'm so glad that you enjoy looking at all the pictures on this fab site. I do too - it's easy to sit here for ages browsing through everything. My pictures have all been given or loaned to me by my rellies and it's only since doing the family tree that I have seen them. It makes me wonder what would have happened to the pictures if we hadn't started the tree.

Thanks again to you all for being so helpful - and I have a Sunlight Soap piccie somewhere which I will try and post on here (when I find it :D ).
 
Quite right Di. When I worked at John Wilson & Sons (Wholesale Grocerers) Ltd on New John Street in the late l950's, I used to have to bundle up the
"pennies off coupons" which came in from the small grocery stores around Brum and the ones for Lever Brothers went to Port Sunlight in Cheshire. It has quite a history as a "company town" https://www.portsunlightvillage.com/page.asp?pageid=history
 
Yes that's it, Di and Jennyann. When we took the children over there I hadn't thought about Port Sunlight until I suddenly saw a signpost for the village so I asked hubby to do a little detour (again!). On the outskirts it's a little run down with shops and buildings boarded up but suddenly you turn the corner and you are in the most beautiful little village with all the old and original buildings, landscaped gardens - very well looked after and maintained. We were told that it's a very sought after place to live too. There is a little museum next to the visitor centre but it was just closing as we pulled up. We took some photographs but I don't know where they are - must have a look for them :)

This is the other picture of my great-grandfather when he was a Travelling Salesman.

I just got Pears Soap from the Pound shop in town 3 for £1.50:)
