There was a William Cater at the Plough in 1808

The two 1830s press extracts mention William Cater.

Ann Cater transferred the licence to William Cater in the 1850s, so presumably, the licence was passed to William Cater (son?)

And there's one about the transfer of the licence in the 1880s from William Cater to Thomas Hanks

You might already know this Rosie, but there's a bridge called Caters Bridge over the canal in Minworth. I think a William Cater lived nearby. May or may not be your branch of relatives, as there were quite a few Caters in Minworth !

Nice photo that Viv. Just as a matter of interest, the small archway on the bridge parapet on the righthand side is the remains of a lock keepers shelter. It used to have a brick built arched roof and a small fireplace.
 
Don't know much about canals, but that lock looks very close to the bridge. Maybe it's a trick of the camera.
 
A few more extracts about the Cator family.

The Minworth Association for the Prosecution of Felons lists a William Cator as a member. Can't say for definite if it's the correct William Cater.

It is close and is also quite common. It was a way of having all the civil engineering work in one place. I know on the Droitwich Canal and (I think) the staffs and Worcester canal a few locks are so close the lock gates have cranked shafts to clear the bridge parapets.

Yes the Cater family is complicated with all the Williams and transcript errors!
