Castle Bromwich Hall

Next we moved onto the area of the Central courtyard, all the modern structures will be removed, and the whole area covered with glass, also in this area a few more bedrooms on the east side,

Into the Long Gallery, occupies most of the south side, looking onto the entrance drive and beyond to the avenue of chestnuts trees which everyone thinks used to line an entrance road but never did. nice carved oak surround to the fire place.

In 1977 I was a member of the Castle Bromwich Mens Club that was based on the Green. The chairman at the time was a chap called William Dudley-Evans and he had been chairman of the club for nearly 50 years. One day I remember him telling us that he once had been invited to dinner at the hall by Lady Ida Bridgeman, Countess of Bradford, and he continued to tell us stories of the day. With much regret I really did'nt take much notice at the time, looking back I wish I had done, and its to my shame that I did'nt. The only reason I am posting this is to say that I once knew someone who knew Lady Ida Bridgeman. Just thought that I would share this bit of useless information. Thank you.

Terry thanks for that, as you say if only,

next the Powder room, only one pic, of the veining on the mock walnut woodwork as advised by William Winde

Next into the seventeeth century the upstairs Dining Room, but became the Drawing Room for Lady Ida,
the panel above the fire place has been removed, to show part of the original house.

This is indeed great news, we live just a few minutes walk away and have despaired of it's gradual deterioration, I can't wait for it to open to see inside, and hopefully have a meal in the restaurant if it isn't too expensive. The Trust who have restored the gardens (not the front garden of the Hall) have done a wonderful job over the years, so it will be wonderful when the two are "married together".

Lovely to see all the pictures of the Hall & church. They played a huge part in my life.
My parents were married in the church, my brother & I were baptised there & my grandparents are buried in the churchyard.
My grandfather who was a gold & silversmith & designer designed & made a banner for the Mother´s Union which used to hang in the side chapel. Don´t know if it´s still there.
I remember the churchwarden Alan Foden who looked as though he had been with the church forever. I believe he was born in the village.
For several years prior to her death in 2007 my mother lived in Rectory Gardens in Rectory Lane.
I remember as a very small child being taken to peer through the Hall gates at the sentries on duty when Queen Mary was in residence.

Here's a drawing of Castle Bromwich Hall which appeared in William Smith's History of the County of Warwick in 1850. Viv.

This is a terrific news item. Having lived at the Hall for almost 4 years from 1959-63 as a student apprentice with GEC Witton and now living in Canada, I would definitely check the Hall out on any future visit to B,ham. Maybe I could stay in my old room situated immediately over the back door in the courtyard, although, in my student days, my window was always being peppered with pebbles by late returning, somewhat half-snapped students who would plead with me to get up and let them in. Fond memories, but I would expect a high class Hotel would employ a Doorman for that purpose.

If anyone is interested in paying a visit to Castle Bromwich Hall, it is open for guided tours this weekend only (29-30 October 2011). Entry is via the gardens. Details on https://www.cbght.org.uk It's not free, but it's is a chance that won't happen too often and the money goes to the Gardens, so I'd bring the camera if I were you :fat:

By Special Invitation of the Owners

A guided tour of the Public Rooms of Castle Bromwich Hall

Entrance via the Gardens

I had a look at the hotel menu, £45pp for a four course dinner. I dont think it will make it on to the BHF meet list.

Ah well, you can always have meet up and have lunch at the Garden Trust's cafe. A little cheaper methinks, and the entertainment is second to none :devilish:
