My gg grandmother Mary Ann BUTLER married Henry LEE in 1837 in Aston. According to the 1841, '51, and '61 Censuses Henry was a 'glass toy maker'. Does anyone know what glass toys were? Also does anyone have other links to this family who lived on George Street West?

I believe that 'Toys' back in the 1800's did not have the same meaning as they do today... Yes it did include Dolls, Soldiers and the like, but it also meant trinkets, some jewelry items and ornaments as well and that would be where the 'Glass ' came in to 'Toy Making'

In the 1855 directory the nearest glass toy makers to George St West were S.F. & A. Heath, at 82½ Vyse St; J.Spencer, 78 Caroline St and C.Welch, 1,Caroline St

Thanks Pomgolian and Mikejee. My first thought was marbles but no doubt children lucky enough to have toys would have been more careful in those days.

The glass blower’s daughter married a ‘brazer’, so might the families have met over the same source of fire; could work requiring a small furnace have been done in a backyard workshop?

Names of other family Brummies: ASHLEY, BUTLER, C/KORE, LEE
