Re: Burbury St. Lozells.

1865 Birmingham Directory.
these two John Jennings both bakers almost neighbours

Re: Burbury St. Lozells.

No 2 in 1876 and 1880 and 1881 (And probably 1873 though no no. is given, but position fits) is almost certainly the same as 306 in 1889, and 1891. 61 is not listed in the 1880 or 1876 directories, but is between willis st and nursery terrace.

Re: Burbury St. Lozells.

Thank you everyone so much for all the infomation. I know John had more than one Bakery. 59 Lancaster St was run by Johns sister after the death of her husband Henry Wilks. Ann Wilks ran the bakers shop at 59 Lancaster Steet with her daughter but she sadly died in Jan 1880 at the age of 49.

No 306 was and still is a quite substancial building to house a bakery. I am so pleased that this mystery has been solved. Thanks again for the imput, I didn't realise the numbers had been changed. This in number 306.

Re: Burbury St. Lozells.

Hi, I lived at 27 Gorden Street that was opposite Burbury Park. There was the Woodall family and I remember a Tony Green who went to Grammer school although he lived in Burbury St. At each end of Gorden Street were corner shops. In Burbury St there was a shop that my grandmother sent me to with the accumulator, some kind of battery. Higher up there used to be a Greengrocers and opposite that a sweet shop of sorts run by someone as children we called Fanny Foster.
Cheers Pauline

Re: Burbury St. Lozells.

Hello

I am interested in finding photos of Burbury Street - particularly any which might show No 157 which I believe was where the petrol station on the corner of Gerrard Street is now. I saw your mention of photos in this post. Are there likely to be any of interest to me do you think?

Many thanks

Re: Burbury St. Lozells.

hi deadwood...type in burbury st in the search box at the top right of the page...there are about 3 or 4 threads on that street...hopefully you will find some useful pics on them..

Re: Burbury St. Lozells.

Thank you for that Astoness - I will have a trawl throough and see what I can find.

Do you or anyone else out there know of a link to any dedicated Lozells sites which you might recommend and which might have some more information?

Thanks

The photo's are brilliant. Thanks for the information on the building which was gt grandfathers shop. These photo's were taken of the building in about 2003.

Thanks Jules thats kind of you.
Lyn here is a map with the location of the Bakery.

Thanks for the map Wendy. I know exactly where the bakery was as I lived just a short way from it. The map you posted shows my old house. Do you know which year the map was produced? My grandmother lived in Burbury Street for most of her life, she died in 1999 aged 100. I wonder if she knew your family?

The Queens Head Burbury St, I have already posted a picture of the park on one of the threads.

The map was a section from the large ones held at Central Library the year was 1955.

I think my great grandfather retired around 1900 and moved to no 224 Lozells Road just around the corner. Here is a picture of my grandparents John and Margaret Jennings with three of their daughters, my granddads sisters.

Re: Burbury Street Lozells

Astoness, I don't know if they are the same family, but I went to school with Roy and Derek Harington in the early 1960's. We were at school at Gower Street. The last I saw of them was about 1966 when they moved into one of the Tower blocks in Newtown. This was as the area was being demolished.

Re: Burbury Street Lozells

hi duggy..it seems that you were at school then with two of my relatives although we are now out of touch with them...their dad cornelius was my dads uncle...what a small world....

Hi, this is the corner of Burbury Street and Wills Street. I used to go to the newsagents, next to Bosworths, for my dad's Woodbines and a packet of KVE scratchings!
