Birmingham Municipal Bank

When the Municipal Bank was first formed in 1919, there were 8 full-time offices and 12 part-time offices around the city. One of the first part-time branches to open (on September 2nd 1919) was at Saltley , on the corner of Alum Rock Road and Bowyer Road. It opened on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, alternating with the Duddeston branch. It was somewhat small. On looking at the photo at first I thought it might be a cab shelter originally, but apparently it was a fireman's shelter, which had been removed from Hagley Road "in the dead of night". Possibly some firemen had an unexpected loss that night. It was on land owned by Ansells, who did not charge rent. The branch was moved to larger, and more secure premises on 16th May 1925.After this there was no chance of it being confused with another hut nearby , the bathhouse of the local YWCA, which did occur with one young lady .

The former head office of BMB is now The Exchange and the city venue home of UoB.
