Birmingham Improvement Scheme. It was one of the earliest and largest examples of municipal slum clearance in Britain.
The driving force behind it was Joseph Chamberlain. Although he ceased to be mayor in 1876, the scheme continued for many years afterwards.
By 1881 the Corporation was clearing around 93 acres of overcrowded central Birmingham, purchasing and demolishing hundreds of houses, workshops and businesses. They were constructing the new Corporation Street, preparing sites for major public buildings including the Victoria Law Courts, andleasing frontage sites for commercial development to help finance the enormous cost.
