It`s sad that a city the size of brum doesn`t have a decent footie team. Footie today is ugly, just look at anyone who scores a goal, mouth agape & roaring " Look at me, I`ve just scored a goal & i am a God" ) The wages they get is obscene, but i guess that`s not their fault. These days i would rather watch a school footie match.
 
Completely agree with you Smudger, todays game is all about money, add foreign players, foreign managers (coach??) and foreign owners to the mix and there you have the demise of the English game. I was born in Aston in 1930 so naturally followed Villa, but now the way football as gone (and it will never be as it once was) I have lost all interest in the sport. TV interference and money hasn't helped either. So sad. Eric
 
My Dad was a Villa supporter as is my son-in-law. My husband, being an East Birmingham lad, supports the Blues. I don't like football.
It used to be a game where lads and dads could all go together on a Saturday afternoon, shout to their hearts content and come home satisfied that a good game had been played. Families just can't afford the prices these days and the games are rarely worth watching.

Even I could see that the last Blues manager was getting results and now? Can somebody tell me what the plan might be?

I can't face much more despondency! Supporting a good football team lifts your spirits if they have played well even if they don't always win. It must be so disheartening for the players to be faced with this latest unfathomable decision.
 
I totally agree that modern football is money, greed, and even fraud, but it is still sad to see the City of Birmingham with two struggling teams, whilst other U.K. cities appear to get all the accolades, not just on the National stage, but also the International stage.

Birmingham deserves better.

Also I don't remember seeing 'diving', shirt tugging and general cheating as now happens in the modern 'win at all costs' attitude to the game. Lady P, I agree the true fan is being priced out just to pay the absolutely obscene salary they give nowadays

I know nothing about this poster, it was sent to me a long time ago by a friend who knows my dad used to take me to all the blues games when I was a school kid. I have not been to a football match for about 65 years so I suppose it was meant as a joke.
 
The Ladies seem to be doing OK though don't they? Although the Blues seem to have lost really good players to other teams. Is it the lure of bigger (dare I say better) clubs or the prospect of more money?
 
The poster in #156 has "2d" on it (bottom left corner) so it must have once been part of a leaflet/book/magazine/programme. Viv.
 
I was born in 1940 and by the time I was 5 I was a regular Blues fan and supporter because my Dad took me to all the home games and a few of the aways.
 
Saw Gil Merrick once in Lewis's. It some sort of promotion in the sports dept. You could try to score against Gil, think it w's c1952.

Wasn't the site supposed to have been a gypsy camp originally, and i suppose they were turned off to allow the ground to be developed.

Hence the rumour of the curse..

As a child I was taken to most blues home games and a few away ones as well. I remember the spectators were all intermingled and would talk to each other during Half time. I do not remember any aggravation between them when one or the other team scored.

Don't ask me, I know B. all about football. I just found the pic online and thought a few might like to see it! I've only ever watched one football match right through, that was the 1966 world cup on telly (they wouldn't let me turn to another channel!)
P.S., Googling gives that a Jimmy Greenhoff played for BCFC 1968–1969, 31 appearances, 14 goals. (Is that good?)
 
I 'played' at Birmingham FC a few times in the late 50's. I was at St Andrews Primary School, and being next door, they kindly allowed us to use a patch of their ground for sports days.

Dad took me to see a football match somewhere, my enthusiasm was so great that he only did it once. I haven''t been to see a match since. I sometimes wish that ladies football had become a thing 40 years ago though.

My dad once offered (threatened?) to take me to Edgbaston to watch "the cricket". I opted for the more exciting alternative of sitting in the garden watching the lawn grow.
