Birmingham buses

Hi Degsy,
2795 is coming up from Garrets Green College island and is at the stop facing the Barrows Lane island (on the now divided 69 and the 17 routes))
2867 might be at the old Haunch Lane terminus of the 18 route but difficult to be sure.
Mike

Hi. Mike. I think you are probably correct about 2867, being at the old 18 terminus, at Haunch Ln. in the background theres another bus just coming down the slope towards Yardley Wood Rd. and that could be the roofs of the prefabs that were in Haunch Ln up to the Tudor picturte house.

Thanks John, I thought it it looked like over our side of town. I've put a card on the post card thread that I know you will like.
Mike

Hi Guys,

Many thanks for your replies in answer to my question regarding the locations of the BCT vehicles. Of those five vehicles that I posted yesterday, all but one of them were based at Yardley Wood garage. The one that wasn't based there was 2795 JOJ 795. That one was based at Liverpool Street garage though looking at the photo of 2853 JOJ 853 and the route it's working on, this vehicle must have had a transfer from Yardley Wood to Acocks Green garage at some point in its career as I seem to recall that both the 31/32 routes were the domain of Acocks Green garage. Perhaps John or Mike could verify that 2853 did have a transfer to Acocks Green in reference to that photo I posted yesterday.

In the meantime, I'll entertain you with more photos of our BCT friends - any ideas on the locations of these five please? Cheers.

Degsy

Degsy168,

Locations, in order.

2893; Canal bridge School Road Yardley Wood.
2903; Colmore Row/Victoria Square/Council House.
2904; Stephenson St./Midland Bank[Bullion entrance]/now Waterstones.
2964; Colmore Circus. Post &Mail in background[now demolished and rebuilt as empty offices!]
3001; Colmore Row. Grand Hotel[as was] in background, now awaiting the inevitable arson attack as the required[by developers] planning permission can not be obtained.

BilboC,

Many thanks mate for the info you've supplied. Okay, this will be the last batch of photos for tonight guys but, don't worry, more will follow!

The locations of these five would be very much appreciated. Cheers

Degsy

3005 looks like Lower Bull Street:
3006 - is that Melvina Road?
3021 is certainly Colmore Row.
3014/3024 - no idea, sorry.

Sorry I know nothing about buses, but some the locations look familiar.

3005 I think its Priory Circus.
3008 I agree with Melvina Rd.
3014 Could be the junction of Hamstead Rd and Church Rd.
3021 Colmore Row
3024 I don't even know if the bus took this route, but it looks like the
start of Birchfield Rd Underpass to me.

Just one small correction, BilboC, 2893 is crossing the river Cole bridge, not the canal, running back into garage allmost certainly off the 29A, or 91 as it was altered to in later years, probably with the conductor on the long back seat reckoning his or hers money up, to save time in garage.

On the subject of illuminated side panels, my fading memory seems to recall that there were not to many.
The only ones I seem to recall are
3003, 3006, 2976, 3089.
I think there was one in the 3100's, but none in the 3200's and none prior to 2976.
Not sure about 3079 either.
Anybody got any ideas?

2976 is at Wythall, and although the illuminated box has gone, there is a notice still in the cab about switching it on when the bus lights are on.

Other BCT vehicles in the fleet with the illuminated advert panel to my knowledge were 2762, 3080 and 3102.
2762 was the only Daimler whereas the others were all Guy Arabs.

City to Sheidon and return via the Coventry Rd, photo shows the traffic island and clocking in station at Colliers Corner, Yardley.

At least one Brum trolleybus survived well after they were withdrawn in 1951 but not as a trolleybus! Here is a pic I found of a trolleybus body mounted on a Bristol chassis with Silcox & Son buses of Pembroke Dock in Wales. Lloyd will probably know which trolleybus it was.

:'( i don,t care who you are, if you were about when these babies were on the road,it has to send a shiver up your spine, to see them now in picture.
and to know where the location is of most of them as well, fantastic work lads to bring them back to life, for us all to see again.
regards dereklcg :)

Trolleybuses 83 and 90 had their bodies transferred to new Bristol K6G chassis by Silcox, of Pemboke dock as ODE 402 and 401.
ODE 401 was scrapped in 1961 but ODE 402 lasted until 1967 and nearly got preserved by a group who wanted to remount the body on a trolleybus chassis.
Here's 83 as a motorbus, and 90 as it ran in Birmingham.
Trolleybus 83 ran until 1967.jpg

Like Lloyd and John I too worked the 144 from Digbeth Garage, firstly as a conductor and then later as a driver. My favourite time on it was the early 1960's when D7's and LD8's were the order of the day. The 3 point turn John remembers was with the longer D9 shown in his fine pic. It was a 2 point turn with the earlier shorter types. The first 144 out of Brum Mon to Sat left at 5-40a.m. and was known as the "newspaper bus", ferrying bundles of various newspapers to be dropped off en route. To ensure reliability and correct drop offs the same crew worked this journey every day (Driver "Cracker" Dewsbury and Conductor Arthur Lawley). Even after the papers were switched to van delivery in the later 60's these two were allowed to work this journey daily until their respective retirements. The 144 was timed at 20mph in the 1930's and still ran as such until the one man (Sorry, one person) buses took over.
Keeping to time was achieved by leaving Brum 5 mins late, arriving Worcester 5 mins early and leaving 5 mins late giving an unofficial 10 mins tea break there. Passengers expected and relied on the late departures and complained bitterly if a keen driver left on time and they missed the bus! During the daytime a can of tea was picked up from a cafe above Great Malvern (run by a Brummie) and the empty can returned on the way back. It was said Midland Red buses ran on tea instead of diesel back in those halcyon days

I found your comment about the newspaper bus's interesting, c1935 my grandfather did the run to Malvern and my father did the run to Droitwich this was sub - contacted from W H Smith's so it seems that it went from van's to bus's and back to vans again.
My grandfather told me he watched the masts put up at Droitwich radio station.

My husbands Father John Russell and Uncle Micheal Bradshaw were bus drivers on the outer /inner circle route i believe from Harborne bus depot .
Both his mother Gladys Russell nee Savage and his Aunt Lucy Bradshaw nee Russell were Clippies ,
Sadly we only have lucy left now ,but we hear many interesting stories from her still .:D Does anyone out there remember them and those days ?

Hi guys,

More photos of our BCT friends for you to view as per the attachments below. Could I again prevail on your local knowledge as to their locations please?

These five photos comprise of a Guy Arab (3101 MOF 101) and the other four are all Crossley-bodied Daimler CVG6s.

Many thanks in advance.

3101 Congreve St turning onto Summer row.
3122 St Martin's Circus, Manzoni Gardens in view behind.
3129 Is that the 'New' Central Library behind? Has the bus just turned into Great Charles Street from Summer Row? Not certain about this one.
(See posts #155 & #157)
3150 Colmore circus. Snow Hill Station is behind the photographer.
3166 Another calculated guess - Weaman Street, heading for Snow Hill - the side of the Gaumont Cinema behind the bus.

Nice shots, the first four in the last days of the 'Standard' BCT bus.

keep me off the streets, can,t get out in the garden with this weather,
off to Coventry in the morning transport museum,my grandson wants to ride,
thrust 2 simulator. regards Derek

Lloyd,

Many thanks for the above info you've supplied. If there's anyone I can rely on, it's you mate. How about the locations for these three then? The photos here are of a Guy Arab III (2586 JOJ 586) and the other two are again Crossley-bodied Daimler CVG6s.

John,

I would say that is the conductor on 3122 as he appears to be in the right place to be changing the destination blind or, perhaps he was enjoying a bit of Daimler thrash while his bus was empty!
