BAYLISS Samuel marriage record

Oldlinoop

proper brummie kid
Hi - my first post. I hope this is the right section.

I am trying to trace the marriage of Samuel Bayliss and Alice Cottom. Samuel was born in July 1856 and Alice in October 1863. The 1881 Census has them as married and living at 8 Alexander Street Birmingham Warwickshire with Alice's parents Henry and Alice COTTON. I haven't been able to find a record of their marriage.

Re: Samuel BAYLISS marriage record

Hi there, welcome to the Forum.
I've had a look and I can't see it either! Have you found them on any later census?
However, I think I've found Henry's marriage,if it's of any use?

Marriages Mar 1852
Henry Cottom Birmingham 6d 161
Alice Keatly Birmingham 6d 161

Re: Samuel BAYLISS marriage record

Thanks for the welcome.
I found Henry's marriage and also his parents marriage. I believe they were Robert Cottom and Susannah Jarvis but nothing for Samuel.
Haven't been able to find them on any later census. I think they only had one child - Charles Henry Bayliss b 1884 and died 1940 who was my grandfather.

Re: Samuel BAYLISS marriage record

Alice was born in Birmingham.
In the 1881 Census there is also a Charles Bayliss as an nine year old inmate at a Coventry Union Workhouse.
Don't know if he is their son. Could it be that Samuel and Alice died early on?

Don't know about this one - they were all from Birmingham.

Re: Samuel BAYLISS marriage record

there does seem to be some confusion though over birmingham or staffs!! on the 1861 and 1871 censuses that linda posted, 1861 says b.bham and 1871 says b. staffs!!

Re: Samuel BAYLISS marriage record

I do have a copy of a death certificate for a Charles Henry Bayliss in which the informant is an F. McDonald and he is a brother in law.
I haven't been able to find any other children of Samuel and Alice so don't know where F. McDonald fits in unless I have the wrong death certificate.

Re: Samuel BAYLISS marriage record

Perhaps this is where the F McDonald has come from?
Marriages Sep 1940
Charles H Bayliss married Edith M McDonald Birmingham 6d 1111

Edith M Bayliss was living with an Edith McDonald at 112 Nansen Road Washwood Heath in 1945 and then in 1950,1955 there is an Edith McDonald,Frederick McDonald (Edith M Bayliss's brother,I presume),Elizabeth T McDonald and an Edith M Martin

Marriages Sep 1948
Edith M Bayliss married Alexander Martin Wolverhampton 9b 2839
Edith M McDonald married Alexander Martin Wolverhampton 9b 2839 (alternative name)

Re: Samuel BAYLISS marriage record

That is certainly very interesting Linda.
The death certificate I have has Charles Henry's death as April 10th 1940!

Re: Samuel BAYLISS marriage record

Hmmmmm, that was quite a promising Bayliss/McDonald link,I thought, when I first saw it!!!
Back to the drawing board?

Re: Samuel BAYLISS marriage record

Yes it looked like the puzzle may have been solved.

Any chance the Sep 1940 marriage date is wrong?

Re: Samuel BAYLISS marriage record

It just says date of registration, July August September 1940.
Was there any address on the death certificate?

Re: Samuel BAYLISS marriage record

It turns out that my sister had ordered a copy of that wedding certificate some time ago only to find it to be the wrong one. It gives this Charles Henry's age as 24 whereas the Charles Henry on the death certificate was aged 55.
The address on the death certificate looks like 1(?)2 Hospital Street, Birmingham and F. McDonald is at the same address. The place of death looks like like Westtern(?) Road.

Re: Samuel BAYLISS marriage record

Western Road would be the Infirmary better known as Dudley Road Hospital.
There is a Thomas McDonald living at 142 Hospital Street in 1939!

Re: Samuel BAYLISS marriage record

Then it must be a T on the death certificate - my poor deciphering!
Don't know where he fits in. I have Charles Henry as an only child and don't when his mother died either.
