Gone, but not forgotten.
The other week when I was in Vauxhall looking at the site of St James in Barrack St. I noticed the site of The Ashted Hamlet was scaffolded and men working. I also noticed that the pub sign was still standing.

Does anyone have any information, is the Hamlet being rebuilt?

Being a rum drinker I had my first drink of Bacardi in the Hamlet when it was almost unheard of in pubs outside the city centre even the gaffer who suggested I try it had no idea what sort of a mixer to use. I'll tell you something else at that time it was the cheapest spirit in the house. When the pub first opened it was not very popular with the locals, as most of them prefered the older type pubs like the Adelaide over the road.

During the course of the sixties it gained popularity and you would get quite a healthy crowd in. I for one would like to see it rebuilt and opened with the same name. I don't drink now but I would make an exception if it was to celebrate on a re-opening night,

I asked the question above about the possible demolition of the Ashted Hamlet in September of last year. As quite some time has passed since, I was wondering if anybody has an answer now.

I have not had call to pass by that way since, and I was still wondering what had happened to the "Hamlet" as building as far back from the road as that is not usually not scaffolded when being demolished

The Hamlet HAS been demolished, a new building stands in its place..I'll find out what its function is next time I drive past.

Thanks for letting me know, thats another part of my history consigned to the dust. I would be interested to know what has been in its place. I wouldn't think it would be a shop. as the last time I took a walk down Revsby Walk was in 1974 and they didn't look to be doing too well then.

I think the Albion Vaults in Cato St North is still in business, well it was last time I passed by. The photo will show the answer to your reference to the Tilt Hammer. It looks to be another of these pubs that suffered an arson attack after being boarded up.

I'm afraid these two pubs are amongst the small number that I never got round ti giving my custom to.

and me and i used to work in the tilt :Dand live nechells my moms freind used to run the hamlett .but i now live in blackpool and didnt know the shted hamlett had gone .

The Hamlet was my local for years i lived across the road in Hindlow Close 5 doors away from yours truely Kandor.....Les,...... somebody who lives not far from it told me its going to be something to do for the ethnic minority also the Rocket is a cyber cafe for the same
 
Yes it certainly is Mariew it was known for years Ropers thats Peggy surname the lady who was the licensee,and also a certain Birmingham historian still pops in from time to time had many a tot there especially on a Friday night with yours truely and my ex work mates from Metro Cammell

My husband goes there still, and he does his tote in there on a monday, I haven't been in there for a while but I used to go in there when peggy ran it, and boy did it used to get packed in there.
 
pmc1947. Phil, forgive me for being a bit dense, was that the "Tilt Hammer"
Photograph at the bottom of Alum Rock ? What was the " Leaping Deer " trade mark ? was it Dares Bitter ?

Hi all,

Do any of you remember the Cider House in Nechells, I can only remember there was another pub on the corner, cannot remeber name of street but if you were coming up Melvina Road (from Alum Rock) turn left at top (railway stn) on right then turn 1st left, pub was on corner and cider hse a bit further down, . I think it was Cato Street but cannot be sure.
Also the Railway in Curzon Street, I used to go there on a Sunday afternoon as they had live bands on , UB40 as you all know used to play there .. rest is history !

The only other pub I can think of in Cato St, save the Manor Arms on the corner (see photo) would be the Duddeston Hall Inn. I can only ever remember using it once so I am unable to remember if it as a cider house.

pmc1947. Phil Thank you for that, just shows how the old grey matter plays up a bit as I get older. Hope its not going off thread but what was the squirrel Trade Mark ?

I am sure that is the "pub on the corner" , abt 100yds further down on same side was the cider house, it was very small but always had a roaring fire in grate during cold months, I used to go in there with my Dad, my Dad took it upon himself to teach me the art of "responsible" drinking after one night I arrived home more than slightly the worse for wear, he used to take me all over the place (me and my mate loved it cos it never used to cost us a penny) and I met many colourful characters on my regular pub crawls, I didn't realise just how many people Dad knew and vice versa until I went out drinking with him.

Many years later when Dad died in 1995 loads of people attended his funeral and asked if I remembered them from the "old days" , they all told me the same - I was "my Dad's diamond" and that I should consider it an honour to be his daughter, he was a geezer that I do know, but boy did he know his pubs and like his pint !:)
 
pmc1947. Phil seeing your last post, I am interested in number 40 Duddeston Mill road on the corner of either Cato Street or Devon Street
( Devon Street I think ) Listed as beer retailer around 1895. All to do with Family History. Would there be a pic of Number 40?

Just googled squirrel and brewery, it was indeed Ansells and the squirrel was adopted by ansells in memory of the "Holte" family:)

While I am here Dianne, can I ask you if you remember the corner of Devon Street ?

Hi Ernie

Don't worry it is pub related, so I would think its OK.

Dianne is right it was the logo that Ansells used but it originally belonged to Holt's Brewery (I think they were based in Oldbury). Ansells took them over in 1934 and started using their logo.

I wonder if any of the ex residents of Aston can tell me where this one is etched into the glass.

Oh dear my memory is still playing me up, I remember it etched on the window of the " Shepherd and Shepherdess " pub at the corner of Henry Street and Heneage Street ( I know its not the one you mean Phil )
I always thought that squirrel held an acorn - Honestly.

I was not that familar with nechells area so I cannot quite get my bearings with Devon st and Cato Street, however -! my mom was born and lived in Devon Street till abt 1938, her parents then moved to Lea Village (to a deluxe showhome) - thats how the corporation described it !!.

She is out at the moment - gallivanting again - (she has more energy than me )but I promise I will ask her when I go to see her tomorrow, something right back in my memory is telling me there was also an "outdoor" on a corner, but that could be the pub that PMC posted earlier
 
Dianna. My Uncle And Aunt where born at back of 40 Duddeston Mill Road which is why I was so interested. At the time the man there was listed as Beer Retailer so it could well have been Off - Sales or Outdoor.

I think over the years the squirrel has been pictured in many different ways and holding many different things. I think he even used to hold my glass for me at times.

Yes thats right I remember, he was the one that made me drink all that booze and get into the states I used to. No the wife didn't believe me either. I will see what I can find out about 40 Devon St.

The Manor Arms did have an outdoor it was in the Cato St Side of the pub, so it may be the one your mothers refers to.

What year was your aunt an uncle born - you may have posted this b4 but being blonde I do not absorb everything:rolleyes: - the reason I ask is Mom was born 1929 in Devon St - Mom remembers everything and everyone from that time (and even before her time!) - I also have a 98 year young Great Great Uncle who lived in Devon Street whose memory is still crystal clear - I interrogate him on a regular basis - his only payment is a bottle of Jack Daniels and a packet of 10 fags - it is a pleasure to buy them for him !;)

Census 1891 Devon Street.
Probably too early for your rellies to know anything of them.
They most probably left the area by 1897.

My Grt Grt Uncle Wilf was born 1910 - but post surname of ur rellies - lets see if he knows the name , he is/was a nosy old so and so and so far has never let me down - probably cos he knows he gets a bottle of Jack Dan's for his trouble, his memory is as sharp as a razor- pity I don't take after him - but according to him I look like his Mom , I hope he means when she was young and beautiful :D
