Antrobus Road, Handsworth

master brummie
I lived in Antrobus Road 1968-1987. It's between Grove Lane and Rookery Road, Handsworth. I obviously have a lot of memories there and lived near the middle (the road is close to a mile long I would guess). I remember two shops opposite each other, near the gullies. One was called Smith's. Both have long closed and have been converted back to houses. Any old photos of Antrobus Road are few and far between. Does anyone have any memories or photo's to share? Thanks.

Hi Kraggy
The only photos i have are in my head a photographic memory of yester years as my early days of a milkman
all around Handsworth And i used to deliver all up Antrobus road and the surrounding streets they was good clean and quite roads
And I would finish out side the red lion pub on soho road before going back to the depot
I Was working for midland counties dairies and the only competion I Had was from WACCO Dairies but we had 99 percent of the handsworth
household during 1950

Took me five years to get around to reading your reply Astonian! I remember the milk floats of the 70's with the quiet humming and clink of milk bottles. That must have been a hard job in the winter! Unfortunately, Handsworth is now violent and drug ridden, with Rookery Road being one of the worst.
My dad drove on the buses and was based at Hockley Garage, which has long been demolished. We moved out in the 80s as my dad got fed up with all the problems.

Unfortunately, Astonian passed away just over a year ago, gone but not forgotten as we say here.
