Ansells Brewery

After the last strike they had a certain amount of the former employees
Formed there own brewery which they called it Aston Mannor brewery down Thimblemill lane
And with management of Doug Ellis,s of the villa chairman,s Son/ InLaw
They brewed well , better than Ansells man of the midlands as Ansells used that phrase as a seller
But sadly they never survived the market after afew year,s down the Line
Incidently my uncle frank marsden from Park street was a drayman there with the horse and Carts
He died in the 1953/4 period he always used a a huge extra wide leather Belt
Around his waist frank was a born and bred man from wigan a very strong accent he spoke with
With a huge body

My dad is on this site as well so I have told him to have a look at some of the names :topsy_turvy: I remember going to the club once or twice to see a band called Calico Blue, I think one of my dads mates was in the band. Such a long time ago..... makes me feel old!!! :uncomfortableness:

One of the band lives in Aldridge Mickey Flynn next door to my sons house

Yes I remember Smithy, how is he these days also Vic Perrins, and Albert the checker.

I started at My Cellar in 1969 as a driver, I transferred to Aldridge Depot when it opened in 1972/73 my back man was John Welch until the strike in 1981, I returned after the strike and my new back man was Danny Baker. We then moved on to Gravelly park where we worked until 1998. I had a few back men at Gravelly Park, after I split with Danny I worked with Derek Sleigh, Mick Foley, Ray Cook and finally Kurt Kelly. Then I went to work in the transport office until I took the early retirement pay off in 1998. I really enjoyed my time at Ansells especially when I was a driver on the road. Great great job, would do it all again.

I have an Ansell's Ash Tray in excellent shape, it's made of Melamine by or a company called Praesidium. I wonder if replicas were made, or if it's original. I will take a photo and post it.

Hi, thanks for your comments, I'm not sure where it is, I just noticed the Ansells sign but the building on the right looks like an official building or maybe swimming baths, pity I can't see the front of the pub, after 30 years at Ansells and 22 years a driver I should really know the name and where it was. Regards Steve.

Thanks for your kind words but this history will be forgotten if we don't write it down. I know myself that people working on the job now, today, don't know the struggle we we went through in the past to pass on a very well paid and happy work life job.
 
Steve, I have been trying to work out if you might have delivered to my grandmother's outdoor in Holte Road Witton. I think she was still there when you joined Ansells.
 
Hi Tony, when I first started at Ansells in 1969 I was in the free trade dept, meaning we didn't deliver to Ansells off licences, so I wouldn't have delivered to your grandmother.
 
Ansell's barrel trussing comes to an end in 1966. Article attached below. Viv.

Hi, I started at Ansells in Feb 1969 and the wooden barrel was still in use till about 1972, I can Rember one day when it was quiet doing none stop runs from the brewery to the sports ground at Perry Barr taking empty barrels to be burnt on the annual bonfire. We were still using wooden hogsheads till about 1971. I also knew a couple of coopers.
