Alum Rock Road.

proper brummie kid
I would like to look at the list of shops/businesses on Alum Rock Road (from The Gate to Highfield Road) in different years; for example 1901 and 1951.
What's the easiest way to do this?

Welcome BarryJohn, don't know what to address you as Barry or John.

There is sure to be someone on the Forum later who could help you but my guess is they are all enjoying the Sunshine today or the Cup Final:)

In the meantime if you haven't seen it try this.

Hi BarryJohn

If you search Shops on Alum Rock Road, page one, No.2 march 10th Mike Jee has put on 2 links to Kellys, which gives you the list of shops. Hope this will be of some help.
Regards

Thanks Alf and Carol.
You were right Alf, the weather was too good to stay in.
I've been in contact with Mike, Carol. I was too thick to find the link you suggested! Mike is emailing me the information I need.
Thanks again to you both for taking the time to answer my question.

Wendyp started a thread in March "Shops on Alum Rock Road" she was writing an article and there are 131 replies.

You may find something useful there.

Thanks for all the advice. I now have several links to Kelly's directory for Alum Rock Road.
Another query.... For the 1901 census I was given great advice on how to find some streets in Bordesley Green and Small Heath by following Warwickshire - Aston - Deritend and then pages 80+.
Can someone tell me how to find streets in Saltley in the same census?

Does anyone remember when there were some maisonettes opposite the Rock cinema, it appears they have been knocked down and a car park is there now.IMG_7735.jpeg

Yes, if they were the building that lay back a bit from the road. If you go to google street view you can change the date of the view. They were there in 2008 but all boarded up and the car park was there in the 2011, so knocked down between them.

I lived in Reginald Road just up from the maisonettes, 60 odd years ago a child ran from those maisonettes and was killed by a car, one day, I can’t remember if before or after this incident I was crossing over from Reginald Road I was 10 and my brother was 7, he let go of my hand and ran in front of a car and was knocked up in the air, he luckily got away with cuts and bruises, I felt sorry for the driver as he had just bought the car.

Terrible how just one moment can lead to such heartbreak.

There were a family named Curley possibly listed at no. 51 Alum Rock Road on ERs mid 50s, and they had a daughter (a twin) who died aged 6 in 1955. Can't see a newspaper report so may be just a coincidence.

That’s the one, I didn’t like to put the name on, but it was definitely the surname Curley. I remember clearly seeing the child in the road, it was awful.

cracking photo dated christmas 1925 barkers butchers 98 alum rock road st view shows no 98 is still there and is called silk touch

I'm moving your post to an appropriate section (the Alum Rock Road thread, unless you wish to offer surname information, in which case it can be moved to our surname interests section).

Edit - now post moved

Who lived at 44 Alum Rock Rd Saltley Birmingham around the 1950s?
There wasn’t a number 44.
40. Mrs Dyoss, florist
42, W.Fulbrook, grocer
Then it was Laburnum Terr, then Cambridge Place.
