Alice Francis Cooper, Pawnbroker. Where Was Place Of Business?

ellie

Seeking on info to see if Alice Frances Cooper or her son, George Edward were operating as pawnbrokers in/around 1937.

In 1901 Alice and her husband Richard were operating from their home at 752 Coventry Rppad. Alice and Richard had been pawnbrokers for several years.

Richard died in 1908.

When George married Gertrude Cooper in 1909 he is listed as pawnbroker's assistant. I am assuming this is with his mother.

I do not know what happened to Richard and Getrude after the wedding.

Alice was living with her daughter Kate at 365 Cherrywood Road Saltley in the 1911 census.

I have been told by a forum member that George was living with his mother at 365 Cherrywood Road Bordesley/Saltley between 1920-1935. I am not sure of the source of this information. I thought perhaps they were operating a business from home.

Is anybody able to assist?

many thanks.

The 1913 Kelly's Directory lists 365 Cherrywood Rd as Mrs Alice F Cooper pawnbroker.

Further to my previous post, in the 1937 Directory there is no listing at 365 Cherrywood Rd for Alice or anywhere else.

Thanks for the info. I will keep digging and trying to add some details. you have given me a 2 year update with the 1913 fact.

I think Alice may not have been working from Coventry road, at least not officially. . In the 1899,1900, 1904 directories it is just given as a private address of Mrs Cooper. She is listed as a pawnbroker only at 14 Barn St. in 1900, 1904,1908, Richard is listed as a pawnbroker in Clifton road (no number given) in 1878 and at 5 Heneage st in 1880 and at Barn St in 1883-1899. Richard is not listed as a pawnbroker from 1900 on. In 1912 and 1913 she is a pawnbroker at 14 Barn St and 365 Cherry wood road but in 1921 , when she is described as Mrs Alice Francis Cooper Sen. (was there a junior ?) was only at Cherrywood road. She does not appear either in the private or trade lists from 1932, and 365 Cherrywood road is not listed.
Remember that date is date of issue of directory and refers to 6months or a year before.

Thanks Mike. I can see you have pput a considerable amount of time on this for me. I appreciate this very much, thanks.

I will sit and collate all of this into the data I already have.

The comment about Alice Frances Sen is interesting. I will follow up to see if there are any girls born after George and Gertrude's marriage that have perhaps been named Alice Frances.

Hi Ellie,

365 Cherrywood Rd, is the home / residental address from the Electoral Register this is not to be confused with a Trading address.
( see your previous thread)

Females are not always shown on the Electoaral Register.
Females were not able to vote until the year 1918 and had to be over the age of 30 years.
This was lowered to age 21 years for all in 1928.

( previous thread )
To confuse matters even more , there is a
George Edward Cooper and a Frances Gertrude Cooper ,
living at 119 Aston Lane in 1930

That does throw an extra cherry into the pie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Would it be likely that somebody has accidently copied the names incorrectly?

Ellie
It is possible names are been copied incorrectly. Errors do occur.

However, it was not uncommon for people to be known by their 2nd or middle name, so this may have been entered onto voting register.

Bo :)
