I think, lookng at the 1966 map, on the first photo no 16 is the third house after the gap.

think no 16 could be on that photo mws although if the numbers went up in 2s starting at no 2 no 16 would be the 8th house up but still in shot...i also think that photo 2 shows the same houses but 2 years later as the wall where the gap is has gone...maybe mike could confirm if no 16 is visible...

The first house is no 20.

Those are a super set of photos Lyn. Perry Barr Driving Test Centre on The Broadway would bring learner drivers down Alfred St. A there was an unmarked crossing at the junction with Vyse Street that was hard to spot with all the parked cars.

It caught a few people out including me on my first test.

Brilliant photos as usual Lyn, Richard is so lucky having 2 pictures of the house.

hi john oh how i agree with you...a photo of our family home is something many of us strive for years to find with no luck....although i do have a few taken in the back yard and one taken of our mom and 3 of us kids standing outside the front window of villa street and also some good ones looking up and down villa st i still cant find a full on shot of my house...but as i always say...never say never

I apologise if this has been raised before, this building is on the corner of Alfred St. and Beales St. The stone above the ornate doorway has the initials 'TN'. Does anybody know what this building is?

The are initials above the door in post #18 are 'TN'

In 1883 The Aston National School was transferred to the Board and was renamed Alfred Street Board Schools.

The 'N' could stand for National but perhaps more likely to be a latin abbreviation, any ideas out there?

Are you talking about 2 different buildings post #18 & #21?

The school was not on the corner of Alfred St & Beale St. The earliest I can see the building is on the 1915 map, not there in 1905.

On the 1937 map it's listed as Telephone Exchange so I'd guess T stands for telephone. Though not sure if that's the building next door on Beale St or both.

It's all very confusing as streetview seems to have a very different street layout. Must say it doesn't look much like a school. I can't find any reference to a factory or suchlike in Kellys. One thing for certain is that, as Mike says, on the 1950 map it is shown as Post Office Stores.
I was looking for a company around 1890-1910 with the initials TN but no joy.

EDIT: Just realised the school was further up Alfred Street between No. 31 and Devonshire Place

It's little different. Alfred St & Beale St are the same, Bright St has been renamed Heanor Croft and no longer joins Church Lane, and a new road/driveway has been built off Beale St just past the building of interest.

Looking at the 1915 the building is not as large as on later maps, not extending as far up Beale St. An extention or new building appears by 1937. If you look on street view you can see the difference in brickwork on Beale St.

So maybe it was an early telephone exchange and was extended when telephones became more popular.

If you type in alfred street telephone exchange into Google Images there is a picture of the building from 1911.

The webpage can't be found but you can still see the picture. You can see it doesn't extend as far along Beales St as it does now. Here it is...
